UNA WOMEN HANG TOUGH AT IOWA, FALL IN CLOSING MINUTES

IOWA CITY, IOWA - Iowa opened the third quarter on a 12-1 run to grab a double-digit lead before holding off the University of North Alabama basketball team 86-81 Thursday evening at Carver-Hawkeye Arena With the win the Hawkeyes improve to 3-0 while UNA suffers its first loss to fall to 2-1 on the year.

The Lions led throughout the first half. Emma Wallen scored 12 points in the opening frame as the Lions grabbed a 22-20 lead at the end of the first quarter. UNA led throughout the majority of the second period until the Hawkeyes got a basket with two seconds remaining to take a 35-34 lead into the half.

Iowa made its move in the opening minutes of the third quarter. The Hawkeyes opened the period on a 12-1 run, holding UNA without a field goal for the 4:01 of the half. A three-pointer at the 6:13 mark gave the home team a 46-35 lead.

The Lions, however, closed the gap by the end of the quarter. Jaila Roberts capped a 21-8 spurt with a layup with three seconds left and UNA trailed just 58-56 heading into the final quarter. The two teams traded leads early in the fourth quarter. A trey by Kenysha Coulson gave North Alabama a brief 59-58 lead before the Hawkeyes responded with five straight points to regain the advantage.

Iowa led by as many as seven before UNA made one last push. After a three-pointer gave the home team a 70-63 lead with 6:31 remaining, the Lions got five straight points by Roberts to close the gap. Iowa, however, was able to answer every UNA score with one of its own to hold on for the win.

Four players reached double figures for UNA, including Emma Wallen's season-high 19 points. The senior moved into the Top 5 of UNA's all-time scoring list with 1,309 career points. Coulson also finished the game 4-for-5 from three-point range and had 16 points on the night. Ivy Wallen had 13 points and eight assists while Roberts also reached double digits with 11 points.

Mackenzie Meyer led Iowa with a game-high 21 points.

UNA will play at Tennessee State on Monday. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. on the TSU campus in Nashville, Tenn.
