TENNESSEE TECH GETS TWO WINS OVER UNA SOFTBALL

FLORENCE – Tennessee Tech rallied to win the opener, then shut down the UNA bats in the second game to come away with a double-header sweep over the University of North Alabama softball team 3-2 and 5-1 on Tuesday.  The home-opening losses leave the Lions with a 10-5 record on the season.

UNA took a 1-0 lead into the top of the sixth inning of the opener. After putting runners at first and third with two outs, the Golden Eagles took the lead on a three-run home run by Raleigh Lewis. The TTU catcher battled through a 1-2 start and a nine-pitch at-bat before connecting on the homer to left center.

The Lions plated a run in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run at second when the game ended.

Meleah Hargett went 3-for-4 in the first game, representing three of the team's five hits. She singled in the bottom of the fifth inning and later scored on a TTU error to give the Lions the 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Hargett doubled to score Harley Stokes from second base. The Lions, however, would get no closer. Golden Eagles pitcher Alyssa Arden (4-2) worked all seven innings to get the win. She struck out seven with five hits and one earned run.

Megan Garst (4-2) took the pitching loss for the Lions. She struck out nine in the first six innings of work.

In the second game, UNA was held to a single run off four hits. After Tennessee Tech took an early lead with two runs in the top of the second inning, the Lions answered in the bottom of the frame. Back-to-back doubles by Stokes and Chloe Kirkland cut the TTU lead to 2-1.

North Alabama managed only one hit after that. The Golden Eagles extended their lead with two runs in the top of the fifth inning and another single run in the top of the seventh.

Michelle Moore took the loss after working the first three innings in the circle. She allowed two runs off three hits to fall to 2-1 on the season. Haeli Bryson (2-1) got the complete-game victory for TTU.

UNA will travel to face Austin Peay for a three-game series over the weekend. The two teams will play a double-header Saturday at 2 p.m., followed by a single game at 1 p.m. the following day.
