UNA BEACH VOLLEYBALL DOWNS UT MARTIN TWICE

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama beach volleyball team ran its winning streak to four on Thursday with a pair of home victories over UT-Martin. After posting a 4-1 victory in the opening match, the Lions completed the sweep with a 3-2 win to improve to 9-7 on the season.

In the opener, UNA won the first three matches to secure the victory. After wins at No. 4 and No. 1, the Lions clinched the match with a three-set victory at the No. 5 position. Genesis Benítez and Ana Gabriela Pacheco split the first two sets before posting a 15-11 victory in the third frame.

UT-Martin picked up a win at No. 3 before the Lions closed out the match with a win at the No. 2 position.

The second match was decided at the No. 2 spot after the two teams traded victories in the first four matchups. With the overall match tied at 2-2, Ashtyn Kapovich and Joise Maldonado came through with a 23-21, 21-14 victory to complete the UNA sweep.

Libby Jump and Ava Carnley gave North Alabama the early lead with a 21-12, 21-15 win at No. 4. The two wins on the day give the duo a 13-3 record on the season. The Skyhawks rallied to tie the match with a win at the No. 5 spot before UNA regained the lead.

Sophia Brandstetter and Paula Klemperer won their eighth consecutive match with a 21-7, 21-10 victory at the top position. UT-Martin answered with a win at No. 3 to tie the match again and set the stage for Kapovich and Maldonado to clinch the win for the Lions.

North Alabama will host a dual against Costal Carolina on Friday, April 12. Match time for the ASUN showdown is set for 11 a.m. at the UNA Beach Volleyball Courts.
