MATIC PLAYING FOR SERBIAN U20 NATIONAL TEAM

TEL AVIV, Israel – University of North Alabama sophomore-to-be Aleksa Matic has spent the summer representing his home country of Serbia in the 2019 FIBA U20 European Championships. The 6-4 shooting guard is one of 12 players on the roster, which won Group B in poll before advancing to the Round of 16 July 13-21 in Tel Aviv, Israel.

Matic, who also played for the U18 Serbian National Team in 2017, said the experience of playing overseas will help his game when he returns to UNA for the upcoming 2019-20 season. "It will definitely help me next year," he said. "I was looking forward to playing with these guys. The styles of play are very different. It helps to bring the American style here, but it also helps to have a European style back in the US. You really need to be able to play both in order to have a well-rounded game and become a complete player."

Prior to the European Championships, the Serbian team played in tournaments against the Ukraine, France, Turkey and Greece. Matic averaged 5.8 points, 1.8 rebounds and 0.9 assists per game.

As a true freshman at UNA last season, Matic saw action in 21 games. He averaged 2.7 points and 0.6 rebounds per game while shooting 34.2 percent from three-point range. He started four games, including a 15-point performance on Dec. 13 against Huntingdon.

UNA men's basketball head coach Tony Pujol said it is an honor to have one of his players representing their home country, as well as represent UNA on an international level.

"It's always an honor to represent your country," said Pujol. "We are extremely proud of him and his opportunity to also represent UNA as a member of the Serbian National Team."
