LIONS OPEN SEASON WITH 98-74 WIN OVER OAKWOOD

FLORENCE – Five players reached double figures in scoring as the University of North Alabama men's basketball team opened the 2020-21 season with a 98-74 home win over Oakwood on Wednesday. Jamari Blackmon led all scorers with 18 points, while Emanuel Littles scored 16 points and pulled down 15 rebounds on the night.
 
The Lions stretched a seven-point lead to double digits in the closing minutes of the first half before pulling away over the final 20 minutes. UNA led 32-25 with 4:56 remaining before using an 11-2 run to take control. Four different players scored during the run, including a dunk and a runner in the lane by Littles. Aleksa Matic also connected on a basket and free throw to complete a three-point play and North Alabama led by 16 points at the 2:31 mark.
 
The two teams traded scores down the stretch and North Alabama took a 49-33 lead into the break.
 
UNA stretched its lead to 21 points on three different occasions early in the second half. A three-point basket by James Anderson with 14:09 remaining to give the Lions a 66-45 lead.
 
The Ambassadors (0-1) were able to cut the deficit to 12 by the under eight-minute media timeout.  Detalian Brown, however, started a 12-2 run with a three-pointer from the left wing. Oakwood followed with a basket before the Lions got treys from Brown and Blackmon, sandwiched around a transition basket by Will Soucie. C.J. Brim hit 1-of-2 free throws to give UNA a 93-71 lead at the 2:25 mark.
 
After the two teams traded three-pointers, another basket by Brown in the final minute of play wrapped up the scoring.
 
Anderson and Brim finished with 15 points each. Matic also reached double digits with 10 points for the Lions. For the night, nine different roster players scored for UNA.
 
Blackmon, who finished the game 2-for-8 from three-point range, moves into eighth place in program history with 134 made three-pointers. Littles also opened the season with his 25th career game with double-digit rebounding totals.
 
UNA will host Carver College on Dec. 6. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
