UNA WOMEN OPEN SEASAON WITH 88-78 LOSS TO AUSTIN PEAY

FLORENCE – Austin Peay used a strong third quarter to take control before holding off the University of North Alabama women's basketball team for an 88-78 victory Wednesday afternoon at Flowers Hall in the season opener for both teams.
 
UNA led 39-37 at the half after Oliva Knight's buzzer-beating three-point basket. The Governors, however, outscored the home team 28-14 in the third quarter. A three-pointer in the closing seconds gave Austin Peay a 65-53 lead heading into the final period.
 
The Lions outscored ASPU 25-23 in the fourth quarter, but could get no closer than seven points. Consecutive baskets by Jaida Bond and Alexis Callins made the score 69-62 with 6:14 remaining, but the Governors responded with a 9-2 run to push the lead back to double digits.
 
A basket and free throw by Macie Lee completed a three-point play and briefly cut the deficit to 83-74 at the 1:48 mark before ASPU's Brianah Ferby hit a trey on the other end to put the game out of reach. Ferby finished with a game-high 26 points for the Governors.
 
For the game, Austin Peay hit 47 percent from the floor, including 10 three-pointers. Shay-Lee Kirby added 24 points for the visitors.
 
Three players reached double figures for the Lions, including Bond's 21 points on the day. Lee came off the bench to add 14 points while Oliva Noah had 13 points and seven rebounds. UNA shot 44.9 percent and was 8-of-21 from three-point range.
 
North Alabama will return to action on Friday at Missouri. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. on the UM campus in Columbia, Mo.
