COLUMBIA, Mo., – Missouri shot 58 percent from the floor and held a commanding rebounding advantage Friday to overcome a three-point deficit at the half and post a 96-78 home win over the University of North Alabama women's basketball team. With the loss, UNA falls to 0-2 on the season while Missouri opens the year with a 1-0 mark.
Jaila Roberts led all scorers on the night with a career-high 34 points for the Lions. The sophomore from Cantonment, Fla., was 11-of-17 from the floor, frequently driving the lane for baskets against the much-taller players from the SEC.
Roberts had 15 points in the first quarter alone as UNA raced out to a 22-19 lead. Missouri regained the lead midway through the second quarter. A three-pointer gave the home team a 31-29 lead before a trey by Olivia Noah put the Lions back on top a single point.
Missouri tied the game at 36-36 with 1:46 remaining before Savannah Holt got an offensive rebound and found Roberts for a three-pointer in the corner. Neither team scored over the final 1:26, sending North Alabama into the half with a 39-36 lead.
Baskets were hard to come by for UNA in the third quarter as Missouri took control with a 32-16 run. The Lions did not connect from the floor for the first 4:34 of the period while the Tigers stretched the lead to double digits with a 15-1 spurt. The lead reached 14 before five straight points by UNA cut the deficit to 59-50 at the 2:35 mark.
Missouri, however, got a three-pointer on the ensuing possession and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the game. The Tigers outscored UNA 28-23 in the fourth quarter.
Freshmen Alexis Callins and Olivia Knight added 11 points each for the Lions. Hayley Frank led Missouri with 24 points on the night.
UNA will be back in action Sunday at Purdue. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. (Central) on the Boilermakers' home floor in West Lafayette, Ind.
