WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind., – Purdue forced 20 turnovers and grabbed 20 offensive rebounds that led to 26 second-chance points Sunday in an 80-69 home win over the University of North Alabama women's basketball team. With the loss, UNA falls to 0-3 on the season while the Boilermakers open the year with a 1-0 mark.
Despite the miscues, the Lions were able to remain within striking distance throughout the contest. After the two teams battled to an early 10-10 tie, the home team scored five straight points to take the lead and never trailed again. Purdue led by as many as 12 in the first half before a three-pointer by Olivia Knight in the final minute made the score 37-28 at the break.
Trailing at the half for the first time this season, UNA opened the third quarter with a 6-0 run to make the score 37-34 at the 8:02 mark in the period. Purdue, however, answered with seven straight points to stretch the lead to 44-34.
After a basket by Alexis Callins made the score 50-42 in the final minute of the third quarter, the Boilermakers got a putback, then converted a turnover into another basket to take a 12-point lead into the final period.
North Alabama got within 11 points on three different occasions over the final 10 minutes of play but could get no closer.
Four players reached double figures in scoring for the Lions, including Sakyia White, who notched a career-high 16 points and eight rebounds. The freshman from Tuscaloosa had only four points and one rebound at the break.
Fellow freshman Macey Lee added 11 points for North Alabama while Jaida Bond and Olivia Knight had 10 points each. For the game, UNA freshmen accounted for 45 of the team's 69 points.
North Alabama will return home before playing at West Virginia on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. (Central) at the WVU Coliseum.
