UNA WOMEN COME UP SHORT AGAINST MURRAY STATE

FLORENCE – Murray State grabbed the lead with an 8-0 run to close the second quarter and never trailed over the final 20 minutes Monday in a 94-80 win over the University of North Alabama women's basketball team. The loss keeps UNA winless on the season at 0-6 as the Lions head to Las Vegas next week for two games at the Holiday Hoops Classic.

On Monday, UNA played even with the Racers throughout the first 18 minutes of playing time. The Lions led 19-18 at the end of the first quarter and held a one-point advantage in the closing minutes of the first half.

After Jaida Bond's basket at the 2:25 mark gave UNA a 33-32 lead, the Lions would not score again in the period. Murray State got a three-point basket to reclaim the lead, then scored five straight points by Manna Mensah to grab a 40-33 lead at the break.

The Racers stretched their lead to double digits in the third quarter and held off multiple North Alabama surges down the stretch. A 20-10 run to start the second half gave Murray State its largest lead of the night at 60-43 midway through the third quarter.

The Lions responded with a eight straight points to cut the deficit to single digits. After a basket by Sakyia White, back-to-back treys by Alexis Callins and Bond made the score 60-51 with 3:34 to play in the period. UNA, however, had turnovers on three of its next four possessions and the visitors regained a 14-point advantage by the end of the quarter.

Murray State led by as many as 16 in the fourth period. After two free throws put the Racers up 71-55, UNA answered with an 11-4 run of its own. Olivia Knight hit two three-pointers and Bond added another trey as the Lions made the score 75-66 at the 5:29 mark.

North Alabama continued to score from there, but could not stop the Racers from answering each basket with one of their own. Murray State maintained a double-digit lead over the final 3:41 of playing time.

Bond and White scored 16 points each to lead the Lions. White's total matched a career-high and the freshman added six rebounds, three steals and a blocked shot on the night. Jaila Roberts rounded out the top scorers for North Alabama with 15 points and also matched a career-high with nine assists.

Katelyn Young led Murray State (4-2) with a game-high 22 points.

In Las Vegas, UNA will play Tarleton State Sunday at 2 p.m. (Central). The Lions will then face No. 25 Gonzaga Tuesday at 4:45 p.m. All games will take place at South Point Arena.
