UNA WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM OF THE DECADE ANNOUNCED

FLORENCE, Ala. -- The University of North Alabama is honoring 17 former Lions with selection to the UNA Women's Soccer Team of the Decade for the 2010s.

The women's soccer team is the third of 11 all-decade teams that will be announced in the coming weeks to honor UNA's top individual performers for the period from 2010-19.

The selections were made by a panel of UNA athletic department personnel.
 
The forwards selected for the UNA Soccer Team of the Decade include Kylie Huey, Jennifer Osmond, Chloe Richards, Chloe Roberts and Shelby Wall. The five players combined for an astounding 286 career goals and 128 career assists at UNA.

The five midfielders selected are Nikki Brown, Jo Chubb, Beatriz Fernandes, Hollie Loud and Margarida Sousa. The group combined for 66 career goals and 127 assists.

The defenders named to the team of the decade are Alyssa Bova, Ellis Hillman, Susan Lang, Julia Osmond and Haley Yarber.

Goalkeeper honors are shared by Alex McLay and Shelby Thornton.

These 17 former Lions helped lead UNA to a combined 121-61-10 record that included six NCAA Tournament berths, and two conference championships.
A native of Arlington, Tenn., Huey was a four-year starter for the Lions from 2015-18. Her 40 career goals rank fifth best in school history and her 16 assists rank ninth. She earned four Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week honors in 2015 and was named the league's Freshman of the Year. In 2016 she set a school record with six goals in a match against Spring Hill and was chosen GSC Player of the Week. She then earned first-team All-Gulf South Conference and honorable mention All-American honors in 2017 after scoring 17 goals that season. As a senior, she was named ASUN Conference Player of the Week for August 27, making her the first UNA athlete in any sport to earn a conference honor on the Division I level.

Jennifer Osmond, from Southampton, England, was a four-year starter at UNA from 2010-13. She earned first-team All-GSC honors in 2011 and was second-team All-GSC in 2013. She earned All-South Region honors in 2011 and 2012. An honorable mention All-America pick in 2011, she was a three-time GSC Player of the Week honoree. Her 45 career goals rank fourth best in school history and her 24 assists rank fifth. She was a three-time Academic All-GSC honoree as well.

A two-time Division II National Player of the Year, Richards played for the Lions from 2012-15 and her 71 career goals are the second most ever by a Lion. She added 14 career assists. Selected first-team All-GSC and GSC Player of the Year in 2014 and 2015, she was named the Daktronics Division II National Player of the Year in 2014 and the HERO Sports Division II National Player of the Year in 2015. A two-time All-South Region pick as well, Richards earned eight GSC Player of the Week honors. Her 30 goals in 2015 are just two shy of the school record and her 26 goals in 2014 rank sixth best at UNA. As a junior, shed led Division II in total goals (26), goals per game (1.368), total points (57) and points per game (3.0). As a senior, led again led Division II in total goals (30), and tied for first in game winning goals with nine. A two-time GSC Top Ten Award honoree, she earned Academic All-America® honors from CoSIDA and was a United Soccer Coaches All-America Scholar. She was recently named to the GSC Team of the Decade.

Roberts, from Plymouth, England, is UNA's all-time leading goal scorer with 93 and is tied for the school record in assists with 51. She led UNA to the NCAA Tournament four consecutive years from 2009-12 and her 32 goals as a freshman set a school record. She followed with 28 more goals as a sophomore. Named first-team All-GSC and first-team All-South Region in four consecutive seasons, she added All-American honors each season and was the 2011 Daktronics Division II National Player of the Year. A nine-time GSC Player of the Week and the 2009 and 2011 GSC Player of the Year, Roberts was recently named to the GSC Team of the Decade, while being selected as the GSC Player of the Decade.

Wall, an Auburn, Ala., native, started for the Lions from 2016-19. Her 37 career goals rank sixth best in school history and her 23 assists rank sixth. She earned first-team All-Gulf South Conference honors on the Division II level in 2017 and was also All-South Region. As a junior, she was named second-team All-ASUN Conference on the Division I level and led the league in assists with 10. She was also All-ASUN Conference Tournament and third-team United Soccer Coaches All-South Region. During her senior season, she led the ASUN in four categories, including most goals scored with 15. She earned first-team All-ASUN Conference honors. Academically, she was Academic All-GSC in 2017 and a two-time Academic All-ASUN selection (2018-19). She earned Academic All-South Region honors as well in 2018.

A native of Bognor Regis, England, Brown was a four-year starter from 2009-12 and is tied for the school record with 51 career assists. A four-time All-Gulf South Conference and All-South Region selection, she added All-America honors in 2009, 2010 and 2011. A three-time GSC Top Ten Award honoree and three-time Academic All-GSC selection, she was also named CoSIDA Academic All-America® as a senior. She added 14 career goals and was recently named to the GSC Women's Soccer Team of the Decade.

Chubb, from Crawley, England, started four straight seasons from 2009-12 and was a four-time All-GSC and All-South Region honoree. She scored 12 career goals and added 16 assists. She was also recently named to the GSC Women's Soccer Team of the Decade.

A native of Lisbon, Portugal, Fernandes started for the Lions from 2014-17 and was a four-time All-Gulf South Conference and three-time All-South Region selection. She scored six career goals and added 16 assists. She was a three-time Academic All-GSC honoree and was a member of the 2017 United Soccer Coaches Women's Scholar All-America team.

A current UNA assistant soccer coach, Loud is from Bristol, England and set a school record with 86 matches played and started from 2008-11. She scored 20 career goals and added 14 assists, earning All-GSC honors in 2010.  

From Lisbon, Portugal, Sousa started every match that she played at UNA from 2015-18. A two-time All-GSC honoree in 2015 and 2016, she helped lead UNA to the championship match of the 2018 ASUN Conference Tournament and was named to the all-tournament team.

Bova, a native of Indianapolis, Ind., started for the Lions on defense from 2013-16 and earned first-team All-GSC honors in 2014. That season, she scored a goal from distance to give UNA a 1-0 win over West Florida.

Hillman hails from Exmouth, England and was a four-time All-GSC defensive selection from 2011-14. She also earned All-South Region honors in 2014. She scored three career goals and added four assists.

A four-year starting defender from 2013-16, Lang came to UNA from Cleghorn, Scotland. She was selected All-GSC in 2014 and 2015 and was also first-team All-South Region in 2015. She was named to the 2015 All-GSC Tournament team after helping lead UNA to the conference championship.

Julia Osmond, a Southampton, England native, was aa four-year defensive starter in 2009 and 2011-13. She was a three-time All-GSC and three-time All-South Region honoree.  

A Cleveland, Tenn., native, Yarber started for the Lions from 2016-19. An All-GSC and All-South Region pick in 2017, she earned All-ASUN Conference recognition on the Division I level in 2018. She scored UNA's first goal of the Division I era off a corner kick in a 5-1 win over Alabama State.

McLay, from Naples, Fla., started in goal for the Lions from 2008-11 and was a four-time All-Gulf South Conference selection. A 2010 All-GSC Tournament honoree and 2010 All-South Region pick, she was a team captain on UNA's first GSC Championship team in 2011. McLay holds school records for most games played in goal (82), most career minutes in goal (6,974:40), most shutouts (25) and lowest career goals against average (1.09). She allowed just 90 total goals in 82 career matches.

Thornton, from Amory, Miss., served as goalkeeper for the Lions in 2014-15 and 2017-18. As a sophomore, she helped lead UNA to a GSC Tournament title and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. As a senior in 2018, she helped lead the Lions to the championship match of the ASUN Conference Tournament in UNA's first season in Division I. Her career 1.14 goals against average is second only to McLay's  1.09 mark.
