Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

UNA MEN HOLD OFF KSU, CLAIM FIRST PLACE IN ASUN

KENNESAW, Ga., – For the second straight game, the North Alabama men's basketball team overcame a deficit at the half to post a road win over Kennesaw State. Jamari Blackmon scored a game-high 21 points and UNA rallied for a 66-64 win over the Owls at the KSU Convocation Center.

The win, along with a loss by Lipscomb on the same day put the Lions into a tie with Jacksonville for first place in the ASUN Conference standings. UNA will host the Dolphins next weekend in a two-game series at Flowers Hall.

On Saturday, UNA trailed 25-20 at the break. Less than 24 hours after rallying from a 25-22 halftime deficit against the same opponent, the Lions grabbed the lead in the final minute and held on for the team's third straight win to improve to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in ASUN play.

Each team claimed double-digit leads. The Lions trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half after struggling to find offense. With the game tied at 7-7 early, UNA missed 13 consecutive shots from the floor.

KSU took advantage, forcing five turnovers during a 14-1 run to claim a 21-8 lead with 3:56 remaining.

The lead remained double digits until the final minute of the period. A three-point basket by Blackmon made the score 25-18 with 40 second to play. The Lions then got a defensive stop and Isaac Chatman hit two free throws with four seconds remaining to cut the deficit to five points at the half.

The two teams traded scoring runs over the final 20 minutes. After battling to a 34-34 tie, UNA grabbed control with a 10-0 run, capped by a basket and free throw by Mervin James. The three-point play gave the Lions a 44-34 lead midway through the second half.

Another UNA scoring drought, however, allowed the home team to get back in the game. Following James' basket, the Lions would not score for the next 7:48 of playing time. The Owls were able to regain momentum with a 16-0 run. A basket and free throw put KSU ahead 60-54 at the 3:06 mark.

Three-pointers by Detalian Brown and Payton Youngblood tied the game and set the stage for a wild finish. The two teams traded scores to tie the game at 62-62 heading into the final minute.

After a step back jumper in the lane by Blackmon put UNA ahead with 49.7 seconds remaining, the Lions forced a turnover. James then hit 1-of-2 free throws to make the score 65-62 with 26.7 seconds to play.

After Kennesaw State's Kasen Jennings drew a foul and hit both free throws to cut the deficit to a single point, the Lions inbounded the ball and sent Brown to the foul line with 8.4 seconds remaining. The freshman from Chicago hit 1-of-2 free throws, then Chatman deflected an inbounds attempt in the closing seconds, allowing time to expire on the Owls.

For the game, North Alabama forced 22 turnovers and converted them into 19 points. The Lions also had seven blocked shots.

Blackmon led all scorers with 21 points. James added 15 points and eight rebounds while Youngblood rounded out the top scorers for the Lions with 12 points.

UNA is tied with Jacksonville for second place in the ASUN standings. The Lions will host the Dolphins in a conference showdown Friday and Saturday with tip-off set for 6 p.m. each night.
