WOMEN’S BASKETBALL COMES UP SHORT AT LIBERTY

LYNCHBURG, Va., - Liberty was able to control the second and third quarters Sunday afternoon in a 77-60 home win over the University of North Alabama women's basketball team. The second straight loss to the Flames gives UNA a 3-10 overall record and evens the team's ASUN Conference mark at 2-2 on the year.

Jaida Bond scored a game-high 22 points for the second straight outing, but the Lions had no answer for Liberty's inside presence. The Flames held a 44-31 rebounding advantage and scored 42 points in the paint, including 22 second-chance points.

After a slow offensive start in the previous matchup one day earlier, the Lions hit four of their first five shots from three-point range on Sunday. UNA led 26-21 at the end of the first quarter and extended the lead to nine points early in the second.

A basket by Bond and two free throws by Jaila Roberts made the score 30-21 with 8:03 remaining in the first half. Liberty, however, answered at both ends of the floor, holding the Lions without a field goal for 6:43 during a 15-1 run.

After the Flames built a 36-31 lead, a three-pointer by Hina Suzuki broke the drought at the 1:20 mark. Liberty answered with a 6-1 spurt, including a basket at the buzzer to take a 42-35 lead into the break.

The home team extended its lead with a dominating third quarter. Liberty outscored the Lions 20-6 in the period to grab a double-digit lead it would never relinquish.

UNA outscored the Flames 19-15 in the fourth quarter but could get no closer than 17 points.

Suzuki reached double figures for the second time in the last three games with 10 points. Alexis Callins added eight points while Sakyia White turned in seven points and nine rebounds for the Lions.

North Alabama will play two games at Jacksonville Jan. 23-24. Tip-off times are set for noon (CST) each day at Swisher Gymnasium on the JU campus.
