UNA WOMEN GET 75-70 WIN OVER OWLS TO COMPLETE ASUN SWEEP

FLORENCE – Olivia Noah had four three-point baskets and finished with a game-high 24 points as the University of North Alabama women's basketball team improved to 2-0 in ASUN Conference play with a 75-70 home win over Kennesaw State on Sunday. The second straight win in as many days at Flowers Hall gives UNA the series sweep over the Owls and ups the team's overall record to 3-8 on the season.

Less than 24 hours after hitting just 4-of-15 three-point attempts against KSU, the Lions caught fire from long range, connecting on 11-of-30 attempts. Jaida Bond, Jaila Roberts and Hina Suzuki also added two three-pointers each while Alexis Callins also added a trey on the day.

UNA closed the first quarter strong to take the lead for good. Trailing 13-12 with 2:34 remaining in the opening period, Noah hit three-pointers on back-to-back possessions. Another trey by Roberts gave the Lions a 21-13 lead in the final minute of play. KSU added a basket in the closing seconds of the quarter.

Kennesaw State regained the lead early in the second period before the three-pointer by Callins put the Lions ahead for good. UNA led by as many as nine in the frame and took a 42-34 lead into the break.

Although KSU outscored North Alabama 21-19 in the third quarter, the Lions never trailed. Nursing a 59-55 advantage, UNA got a steal and layup by Macey Lee to extend the lead to six points heading into the final stanza.

A transition basket by Noah gave UNA a 70-62 lead with 6:10 remaining before the Owls made one last push. The Lions had two turnovers and missed five straights during a 7-0 KSU run as the visitors pulled within a single point.

Holding a 70-69 advantage in the final minute of play, Suzuki connect from three-point range to give the Lions breathing room. Kennesaw added a free throw on the ensuing possession, but would not score again. Two foul shots by Callins with 10.7 seconds remaining sealed the win for North Alabama.

Callins and Roberts finished with 13 points each, a new career-high for Callins. Suzuki also reached double figures for the first time in her career with 10 points. The junior from Hamamatsu, Japan also just missed a double-double with a game-high nine assists.

Freshman Sakyia White also turned in her second straight double-figure rebounding game with 13 boards to go along with her five points. Jah'Che Whitfield led KSU (3-2) for the second straight game with 17 points.

UNA will play two games at Stetson Jan. 9-10. Tip-off is set for noon (Central) each day at the Edmunds Center on the Stetson campus in DeLand, Fla.
