LIONS COME UP SHORT 3-1 AGAINST JACKSONVILLE STATE

FLORENCE – Jacksonville State maintained first place in the ASUN Conference North Division with a 3-1 victory over the University of North Alabama volleyball team Friday evening at Flowers Hall. With the 16-25, 15-25, 25-19, 21-25 loss, UNA falls to 9-18 overall and 3-11 in league play.

The Lions got off to slow starts in each of the first two sets before avoiding the sweep with a six-point win in the third frame. Miya-Cole Brown came off the bench to spark the home team, connecting on four kills in the set to pace UNA.

After hitting .077 in the first set and .071 in the second, North Alabama hit .346 in the third game while the Gamecocks struggled for the first time. The win pushed JSU (22-5 overall, 12-2 ASUN) to a fourth set for the first time since Sept. 26.

In the fourth set, the two teams battled to a 15-15 tie before the visitors began to pull away. After Jacksonville State took control with a 4-1 spurt, kills by AK Griggs and Maggie Sullivan kept the Lions within striking distance. UNA fought off one match point before a kill by JSU's Katie Montgomery ended the match.

The Gamecocks had three players reach double figures in kills, including Lena Kindermann's match-high 16 kills.

Katy Floyd led UNA with 12 kills. The freshman from Louisville, Ky., also added to her ASUN-leading total with a pair of service aces on the night. Griggs finished with nine kills and two blocks while Sullivan also reached double figures with 10 kills to go along with her .389 hitting percentage.

Breylee Linder also turned in 43 assists while Katie Gerig had 15 digs on the night.

UNA will close out the regular season with two road matches. The Lions will play at Lipscomb on Nov. 12, followed by a Nov. 14 matchup at Central Arkansas.
