LIPSCOMB VOLLEYBALL DOWNS UNA 3-0

FLORENCE – Lipscomb grabbed momentum with a 10-point victory in the opening set, then held off host North Alabama for two close wins to complete the 3-0 sweep Tuesday evening in ASUN Conference volleyball action. With the loss, UNA falls to 1-7 on the season an 1-6 in league play.

The Bisons (9-2 overall, 6-1 ASUN) hit .536 in the first set and never trailed. The next two frames were much closer.

The two teams traded early leads with Lipscomb taking control late in both the second and third sets. Each time, UNA rallied to stay within striking distance only for the visitors to make the plays down the stretch to get the win.

In the second set Lipscomb led 18-11 before holding off a late rally by the Lions. A kill by Sarah-Elizabeth Williams closed the gap to 20-19 before the Bisons responded with four straight points. After a service error, Lipscomb won the set with a kill to take a 2-0 lead.

The third set featured a similar script. The Bisons led 18-10 before holding off UNA down the stretch. After a 9-1 run by the Lions tied the match at 19-19, Lipscomb answered with five straight points to regain control. Two kills by Maggie Sullivan and another by Kamryn Parsonage closed the gap to 24-22 before the visitors ended the set with a kill of their own.

Parsonage led UNA with 10 kills. The freshman from Cypress, Calif., also hit .375 for the match. Kennedey Johnson added 11 assists while Katie Gerig turned in a team-high eight digs.

UNA will play Lipscomb again on Wednesday. Match time is set for 6 p.m. at Allen Arena on the LU campus in Nashville.
