FLORENCE, Ala. -- North Alabama scored four runs in the eighth inning to take a three-run lead and got out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth with a game-ending double play to down Bellarmoine 8-6 in ASUN Conference baseball action at Mike Lane Field.
The win snapped a 13-game losing skid for the Lions and pushes UNA's overall record to 5-30 and its ASUN mark to 4-12. Bellarmine is now 10-24 overall and 5-12 in the ASUN.
UNA took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning and held it until the Knights got a three-run homer in the sixth to tie it.
UNA immediately went back on top 4-3 with a run in the bottom of the sixth before Bellarmine used two runs in the eighth to take its first lead at 5-4.
The Lions then plated runs runs in the eighth and held the Knights scoreless in the ninth for the win.
In the UNA first,
Drew Hudson got a leadoff single,
Devne Daniel singled and
Kylan Barnett walked to load the bases with no outs. Bellarmine starter Deylen Miley then got two strikeouts before
Luke Harper delivered a two-run single. Barnett later scored on a double steal attempt to make it 3-0.
In the sixth, Bellarmines Clayton Mehlbauer broke up UNA starter
Hunter Davidson's shutout with a three-run homer to tie the game at three. Â
In the bottom of the sixth, Hudson was hit by pitch, stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored on a fielder's choice as Barnett picked up the RBI to give the Lions a 4-3 lead.
In the Bellarmine eighth, the Knights scored two runs to take the lead before Davidson departed. He threw 132 pitches in seven and a third innings, allowing five runs on 12 hits with five strikeouts.
UNA reliever
Jacob James got the final two outs of the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, Hudson got a single with one out and Daniel followed with a double. Barnett was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Reid Homan delivered a two-run single to ut UNA on top 6-5. Harper sacrificed in Barnett and Homan scored on a
Harris Kain RBI-single to extend the lead to 8-5.
In the top of the ninth, James walked two batters before Austin Nicholls came on. He recorded one out before walking a batter to load the bases. Mehlbauer then ripped a ball to third base that
Peyton Thomas field, threw to Harper for a force out at the plate and then on to first to complete the double play and end the game.
James (1-1) got his first collegiate win and Nicholls recorded his first save of the season.
The Lions and Knights play against Saturday in a single game at 2 p.m.
