CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. --
Garrett Smith hit a two-run pinch hit home run in the top of the ninth inning to give the University of North Alabama to a 15-14 lead but it wasn't enough as Austin Peay State rallied in the bottom of the inning for a 16-15 win over the Lions.
The 15 runs were a season high for the Lions, who fall to 5-33. Austin Peay is now 15-23.
UNA took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, only to have the Governors score three runs in the bottom of the frame.
The Lions went back on top with two runs in the second to take a 4-3 lead before APSU scored five in the third for an 8-4 advantage.
After North Alabama scored three more in the top of the fourth to close to 8-7, Austin Peay scored two more in the fourth and two in the sixth to make it 12-7.
North Alabama plated six runs in the top of the seventh for a 13-12 advantage but couldn't hold it as APSU scored two more in the bottom of the seventh to regain the lead at 14-13.
With North Alabama down to its last out in the top of the ninth,
Peyton Thomas drew a walk and
Dominick McIntyre came on to run for him. Smith then launched a home run to give UNA a 15-14 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Governors got three singles and a walk off reliever Keegn Foge to scored two runs and take the 16-15 win.
Foge (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in one inning of work.
Devne Daniel and
Kylan Barnett led UNA with three hits each, while
Drew Hudson and
Reid Homan added two each.
Barnett and Smith homered for the Lions.
The Lions begin their final ASUN Conference series on Friday at Lipscomb.
