LIONS HOLD OFF EKU 75-74 FOR FIRST ASUN WIN

FLORENCE – C.J. Brim connected on two free throws with 5.3 seconds remaining and Eastern Kentucky missed a shot at the buzzer to give the University of North Alabama men's basketball team a 76-75 home victory Tuesday evening at Flowers Hall. The win evens UNA's record at 8-8 and also gives the Lions their first ASUN Conference victory of the season.
 
On Tuesday, the game featured 14 ties and 13 lead changes. The Colonels had taken their last lead with 1:31 remaining when a three-point basket just beat the shot clock to put the visitors ahead 75-74.
 
UNA failed to score on the ensuing possession and EKU ran the clock down to 10 seconds after getting an offensive rebound. The Colonels, however, were unable to add to the lead and Brim drove the lane to draw the foul.
 
Both teams called timeout after Brim's foul shots and Devontae Blanton's runner was off the mark as time expired.
 
North Alabama led 39-38 at the break and briefly stretched the lead to double digits midway through the second half. After consecutive three-pointers by Aleksa Matic and Will Soucie, a transition basket by Daniel Ortiz gave the Lions a 63-53 lead with just under 12 minutes remaining.
 
UNA, however, struggled to score as the Colonels rallied. The Lions had three turnovers and missed nine straight shots from the floor during a 14-0 EKU run. After two free throws gave the visitors a 67-63 lead, a basket by Damian Forrest cut the deficit to two points with 6:36 remaining.
 
The teams traded leads four more times down the stretch.
 
Ortiz led all scorers with 20 points. The freshman from Shreveport, La., was 9-of-20 from the floor, including a pair of three-point baskets. Forrest added his second double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. He also added three blocked shots on the night.
 
Russhard Cruickshank and Jomaru Brown scored 14 points each to lead Eastern Kentucky (8-9 overall, 0-3 ASUN).
 
UNA will play at Central Arkansas on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. at the Farris Center on the UCA campus in Conway, Ark.
