UNA COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AT BELLARMINE

LOUISVILLE, Ky., – After trailing by as many as 20 points in the second half, a late rally by the University of North Alabama men's basketball team came up short in the final minute during a 68-60 loss at Bellarmine on Tuesday. With the loss, UNA falls to 8-10 overall and 1-4 in ASUN Conference play.
 
Bellarmine shot 51.9 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes and took a 35-22 lead into the half. A pair of free throws later put the Knights ahead 55-35 with 8:36 remaining.
 
UNA was able to get back in the game with defense. The Lions held the home team to a single field goal over the next 7:01 while slowly chipping away at the deficit.
 
Daniel Ortiz connected on a trio of three-point baskets during the run. North Alabama got within single digits when a jumper in the lane by C.J. Brim made the score 60-51 with 3:59 remaining. Brim later hit two free throws to cap a 21-5 run and cut the deficit to 60-56 at the 1:37 mark.
 
Bellarmine, however, countered with a full-court pass on the ensuing inbounds play, resulting in a layup by Dylan Penn. UNA failed to score on the other end and the Knights added two free throws to stretch the lead back to eight with 1:19 remaining. The Lions would get no closer than six points the rest of the way as time ran out.
 
Ortiz finished with 15 points to lead North Alabama. The freshman has reached double figures in four straight ASUN games. Brim added 10 points for the Lions.
 
Penn led all scorers with 20 points for Bellarmine, which improves to 10-8 overall and remains perfect at 4-0 in ASUN play.
 
UNA will return home to host Stetson on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
