UNA VOLLEYBALL FALLS AT JACKSONVILLE STATE

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State hit .372 as a team and recorded 54 kills during a 3-0 home sweep over the University of North Alabama volleyball team on Friday. The 10-25, 13-25, 22-25 loss leaves UNA with a 13-14 record heading into Sunday's season finale against Lipscomb. The Lions are 3-12 in ASUN play and will not advance to next weekend's conference tournament.
 
On Friday, JSU's Lena Kindermann and Sophie Riemersma combined for 31 kills as the Gamecocks (23-5 overall, 11-4 ASUN) moved into a tie for third place in the league standings.
 
UNA struggled on offense throughout the night and never led in each of the first two sets, hitting .179 in the opener and -.120 in the second frame.
 
The Lions' best showing came in the third game. North Alabama hit .214 in the frame and opened the set on an 8-3 run. UNA led by as many as eight before the home team rallied. A kill by Anna Katherine Griggs gave the Lions a 20-12 lead.
 
The Gamecocks, however, stormed back. Six straight Jax State points made the score 20-18 before a service error broke up the run. Two more points pulled JSU within a single point before another kill by Griggs made it 22-20. The Lions would not score again.
 
Griggs finished with seven kills to lead UNA. Elif Ozsoy had nine assists while Katie Gerig notched a match-high 18 digs. Katy Floyd added 16 digs while Taylor Floyd also reached double figures with 16 digs on the night.
 
Match time for the season finale against Lipscomb is set for 1 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
