Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

UNA MOVES TO 3-0 WITH 100-60 WIN OVER BLUE MOUNTAIN

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama men's basketball team reached 100 points for the second time in its first three games on the season with a 100-60 win over Blue Mountain Monday evening at Flowers Hall. The win gives the Lions a 3-0 start to the season.

UNA, which opened the season with a 108-51 win over Oakwood, had 13 different players score Monday against the Toppers. Daniel Ortiz led all scorers with 21 points while three other players reached double figures for the Lions.

Three-point shooting paved the way for the Lions' success on offense. UNA was 13-of-23 (56.5 percent) from long range and finished the game shooting 58.7 percent from the floor.

North Alabama opened the game on a 13-4 and never let the visitors threaten. Four different players scored for the Lions in the opening minutes. A basket in the paint by Damian Forrest gave UNA the early nine-point lead with 16:09 remaining in the first half.

Blue Mountain (4-1) got within seven at 19-12 midway through the half, but could get no closer. The Lions responded with a 17-6 run and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the night.

A dunk in transition by Detalian Brown started the run and a three-point basket by Dallas Howell ended it, giving UNA a 36-18 lead with 6:26 remaining. A basket in the paint by Daniel Braster in the final minute gave the home team a 54-29 lead at the break.

The Toppers scored the first basket of the second half, but a 17-5 spurt by the Lions quickly pushed the lead to 35 points. A steal by Howell led to a runner by Will Soucie at the 15:09 mark to give UNA a 71-36 lead and prompt a Blue Mountain timeout.

The lead passed 40 points on a three-pointer by Brown with 13:22 remaining to make the score 77-36.

The Lions reached the century mark with 1:28 to play when a putback by Bryson Dawkins wrapped up the scoring by both teams on the night.

UNA held a commanding 40-23 rebounding advantage. The Lions also outscored the visitors 46-18 in the paint and converted 19 Blue Mountain turnovers into 23 points.

Forrest added 13 points while Brown and Braster finished with 11 points each.

UNA will travel to face Mississippi Valley State on Friday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on the MVSU campus in Itta Bena, Miss., and will start a six-game road swing for the Lions.
