LIONS FALL ON THE ROAD AT MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE

FLORENCE – Offensive struggles in the closing minutes resulted in the first loss of the season for the University of North Alabama men's basketball team. The Lions hit three shots from the floor in the final nine minutes of playing time in a 76-68 loss at Mississippi Valley State on Friday. With the loss, UNA falls to 3-1 on the season.

UNA led by six with 9:28 remaining after a jumper by Daniel Ortiz gave the visitors a 54-48 lead. Mississippi Valley answered with a 17-5 run to grab a six-point lead of its own. All five points came from the free throw line as the Lions had two turnovers and missed seven straight shots.

Trailing 65-59, a three-point basket by Ortiz cut the deficit to three points with 2:36 remaining. After the Devils stretched the lead to nine in the final minute, two more three-pointers by Ortiz kept the Lions in striking distance.

His first trey with 23 seconds left made the score 71-65. After two free throws by MVSU, he hit from long range again with 16 seconds to play.

UNA forced a turnover on the ensuing inbounds pass but Ortiz' next three was off the mark and the home team secured the rebound. The Devils hit 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Ortiz and Dallas Howell scored 13 points each to lead the Lions. Will Soucie added 11 points while KJ Johnson and Jacari Lane scored 10 points each.

North Alabama led 33-31 at the half but made only 10 shots from the floor over the final 20 minutes of play. The Lions held a 38-37 rebounding advantage. MVSU, however, grabbed 11 offensive boards which led to 15 second-chance points.

UNA will travel to Santa Barbara, Calif., next week for two games at the UC-Santa Barbara Beach Classic. The Lions will play Hampton on Nov. 22 before taking on the host Gauchos the following day.
