LIONS RALLY FOR 75-74 WIN OVER HAMPTON

SANTA BARBARA, Calif., – Jacari Lane converted two three-point plays in the final 11 seconds and the University of North Alabama men's basketball team opened the Santa Barbara Beach Classic with a 75-74 win over Hampton on Tuesday. The win gives the Lions a 4-1 record on the season.

UNA trailed by four with 19 seconds remaining after two free throws gave the Pirates a 73-69 lead. Lane, a freshman from Huntsville, converted on the ensuing possession, drawing a foul after making a basket in the paint with 11 seconds to play. His free throw cut the deficit to 73-72.

North Alabama fouled on the next possession to send Hampton to the free throw line with eight seconds remaining. Raymond Bethea, Jr., connected on one of two attempts to stretch the Pirates lead to 74-72. Lane then brought the ball up the court, drove the right side of the lane and made the shot after drawing a foul. His free throw with 5.2 seconds left gave UNA its first lead since 7:20 remaining in the game.

Daniel Braster blocked Hampton's last shot attempt to preserve the win.

"We knew that Hampton was a team that was not going to go away," said UNA men's basketball head coach Tony Pujol. "We played a little nervous at first but settled in and began to play defense really well. We were able to get stops when we needed to down the stretch."

The Lions led the entire first half, including a 39-30 lead at the break. Hampton, however, grabbed momentum in the second half. After a basket by Daniel Ortiz gave UNA a 43-30 lead with 18:33 remaining, the Pirates answered with a 15-2 run to tie the game at 45-45.

The Lions responded with a 9-0 spurt of their own, capped by a dunk by Braster at the 10:15 mark to give North Alabama a 54-45 lead.

UNA would struggle from the floor from that point, going without a field goal for the next 6:42 of playing time. Hampton took its first lead with basket with 5:53 remaining to go ahead 57-55. The Pirates led by as many as four points on six different occasions but could never pull away.

Ortiz led the Lions with 23 points. He scored 21 in the first half alone. "In the second half, they began to switch on Daniel (Ortiz) and always had a guy on him," added Pujol. "That opened up the game for Jacari (Lane) and Dallas (Howell) and they were able to make plays."

Lane finished with 15 points, including 13 over the final 20 minutes of play.

UNA will stay on the west coast to play UC-Santa Barbara on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. local time (9 p.m. CST) at The Thunderdome on the UCSB campus.
