SHARP SHOOTING UC SANTA BARBARA DOWNS UNA MEN 89-71

SANTA BARBARA, Calif., – UC Santa Barbara shot over 61 percent from the floor, including 13 three-point baskets in an 89-71 home win over the University of North Alabama men's basketball team on Wednesday. The loss gave UNA a 1-1 record at the Santa Barbara Beach Classic and dropped the Lions' overall mark to 4-2 on the season.

The Gauchos used the sharp shooting to overcome a fast start by UNA, which opened the game on a 12-4 run. A three-pointer by Detalian Brown later put the Lions ahead 22-14 midway through the first half.

UCSB answered with a 9-0 run to take its first lead. The home team connected on three straight long-range shots while the Lions went 0-for-3 from the floor with three turnovers during the stretch. A pair of free throws by Will Soucie gave UNA a 24-23 lead at the 8:06 mark but the Gauchos continued to find their offensive rhythm.

A three-pointer at the first-half buzzer but UCSB on top 41-37 at the break.

UNA could never regain the lead in the second half, but stayed within striking distance early. A steal by Daniel Braster led to a transition basket by Jacari Lane to make the score 53-52 with 12:25 remaining.

UCSB, however, began to pull away down the stretch. The Gauchos grabbed their first double-digit lead at 66-56 with 8:10 to play. The two teams then traded scores, with the UCSB lead ranging from eight to 11 points over the next 3:19 of playing time.

With UCSB nursing a 75-66 lead, the home team closed the game on a 14-5 run.

Damian Forrest led UNA with 15 points and eight rebounds. The junior from Fort Collins, Colo., added two blocked shots on the night. Daniel Ortiz also had 13 points while Lane and KJ Johnson also reached double figures with 10 points each.

Ajay Mitchell led UCSB, which was the preseason favorite to win the Big West Conference, with a game-high 17 points.

UNA will play at Georgia Tech on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. (CST) at McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta.
