LIONS STUMBLE AT HOME AGAINST BELLARMINE

FLORENCE – Bellarmine shot 47.2 percent from the floor, including 11 three-point baskets Saturday in a 75-69 win over the University of North Alabama men's basketball team. The fourth straight loss leaves UNA with a 9-16 overall record and a 2-10 mark in ASUN Conference play.

After the two teams battled to a 32-32 tie at the half, the Knights outscored UNA 43-37 over the final 20 minutes. The Lions were effective in the paint, but connected on just 4-of-14 attempts from long range.

North Alabama trailed by as many as nine in the first half before rallying to tie the game. After a three-pointer gave Bellarmine a 30-21 lead at the 6:18 mark, UNA closed the half on an 11-2 run.

With the Lions trailing 32-30 in the closing seconds, C.J. Brim got a steal and drew a foul with .9 seconds remaining. The senior from Tupelo, Miss., hit both free throws to tie the game at the break.

UNA could never regain the lead in the second half. After two early free throws by the Knights, a basket by Will Soucie tied the game at 34-34. Bellarmine then reeled off seven straight points and maintained the lead the rest of the way.

The deficit never grew past 10 points as the Lions remained within striking distance. North Alabama, however could get no closer than four points. A trey by Aleksa Matic cut the deficit to 62-58 with 6:16 to play and the Lions got a stop on defense. UNA then missed its next three shots from the floor as the visitors quickly pushed the lead back to 10 at 70-60.

Bellarmine hit 9-of-12 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Brim led UNA with a season-high 18 points. Daniel Ortiz added 10 points while Soucie recorded seven points and 10 rebounds on the night.

CJ Fleming led Bellarmine (15-11 overall, 9-3 ASUN) with a game-high 24 points.

UNA will play at Eastern Kentucky on Feb. 16. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. (CST) at McBrayer Arena on the EKU campus in Richmond Va.
