LIONS DROP HOME GAME TO JACKSONVILLE

FLORENCE – North Alabama shot 26 percent from the floor and surrendered 16 second-chance points in a 56-50 home loss to Jacksonville Thursday evening in ASUN Conference men's basketball action. With the loss, UNA falls to 9-13 on the season and 2-7 in league games.

The Lions led 21-19 at the half, but made just seven shots from the floor over the final 20 minutes. Jacksonville used a 12-0 run to take the lead with 7:53 remaining and UNA could never pull even.

After a pair of free throws by Jamari Blackmon gave the Lions a 35-27 lead at the 11:05 mark, UNA went scoreless for 4:22 of playing time. North Alabama missed five straight shots and had two turnovers as the visitors made their move.

A basket in the paint gave the Dolphins a 37-35 lead with 7:53 to play and the visitors added another score to go ahead by four before a jumper by C.J. Brim ended the drought for the Lions.

Jacksonville stretched its lead to nine with a pair of free throws with 2:43 remaining. UNA cut the deficit to 49-44 on a three-point basket by Daniel Ortiz with 1:46 to play. The Lions forced a miss on the ensuing JU possession, but an offensive rebound led to a second-chance three-pointer by the Dolphins to push the lead back to eight points.

Ortiz connected on another trey in the final minute and added a driving layup to make the score 53-49 with 28.5 seconds remaining. UNA, however, would get no closer.

Jacksonville finished with a 48-31 rebounding advantage and outscored the Lions 22-12 in the paint.

Ortiz led the Lions with 15 points. Jamari Blackmon added 10 points before fouling out with 29 seconds to play. Kevion Nolan led Jacksonville (14-7 overall, 6-3 ASUN) with a game-high 20 points.

UNA will host North Florida on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
