SOFTBALL RALLIES PAST NICHOLLS FOR SEVENTH STRAIGHT WIN

MONTGOMERY – The University of North Alabama softball team scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally for a 6-5 victory over Nicholls State Sunday in the final game of the Alabama State Black and Gold Tournament. With the win, UNA finished as the only undefeated team at the event and improved to 18-3 on the season after stretching its overall winning streak to seven straight games.

On Sunday, the Lions entered the bottom of the seventh trailing 5-2. UNA quickly loaded the bases with one out before Georgia Land drew a walk to start the scoring in the frame. A single up the middle by Sidney Bevis made the score 5-4 and kept the bases loaded for Hailey Jones, who was hit by a pitch to tie the score.

Emma Broadfoot then singled to left field to drive home the game-winning run.

It was UNA's third last-at-bat victory and first walk-off win of the season. At the Black and Gold Tourney, the Lions trailed at some point in four of the five games before rallying each time.

The lead changed hands four times on Sunday. Nicholls took an early 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the top of the first inning. North Alabama took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the frame with a two-out RBI-double by Harley Stokes.

The Colonels tied the game at 2-2 with a single run in the top of the third, then scored three times in the sixth to take the 5-2 lead into the final inning.

UNA managed just six hits but had RBI's from five different players. Brooke Burback was 2-for-3 at the plate. Megan Warhurst (2-1) got the win in the circle after working the final 2.1 scoreless innings. She allowed two hits and had three strikeouts. Sophie Golliver worked the first 5.1 innings, scattering six hits with four strikeouts.

UNA will play at Mississippi State on Wednesday. First-pitch is set for 6 p.m. on the MSU campus in Starkville, Miss.
