LIONS DROP SERIES OPENER IN EXTRA INNINGS

FLORENCE, Ala. -- The University of North Alabama held a 6-1 lead in the seventh inning but couldn't hold it as Lipscomb rallied for an 11-7 win over the Lions in 11 innings in ASUN Conference baseball action at Mike Lane Field.

With North Alabama leading 7-5 in the ninth inning, Lipscomb scored two runs to tie the game, then added four more in the top of the 11th for the win.

With the loss, UNA is now 8-23 overall and 2-11 in the ASUN. Lipscomb is now 19-15 overall and 8-5 in the ASUN.

After Lipscomb got a run in the top of the first inning, UNA answered with two-run home runs from Jonathan Lane and Reid Homan in the bottom of the first to take a 4-1 lead.

UNA added two more in the second inning on a combination of three straight hits and a walk. Luke Harper scored on a throwing error and Austin Thrasher on a passed ball to make it 6-1.

UNA starter Austin Nichols allowed just two runs over the first six innings before giving up three in the top of the seventh. He threw 136 pitches before finally being lifted for reliever John Lundgren.

The Lions got an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when Lane singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Drew Hudson.

UNA closer Austin Emener entered in the eighth with a two-run lead and struckout the side. But in the ninth he allowed two runs, including a game-tying home run by Malik Williams.

The first six batters that the Bisons sent to the plate in the 11th reached base and Emener (0-2) took the loss.
