VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS STONEHILL, UNC-ASHEVILLE TO OPEN SEASON

ASHEVILLE, N.C., – The University of North Alabama volleyball team opened the 2022 season with a pair of 3-0 victories at the UNC-Asheville Invitational. The Lions defeated Stonehill (25-13, 25-9, 25-14) and host UNCA (25-18, 25-15, 25-21) to open the Tristan Johnson era with a perfect 2-0 mark.
 
In the opener, the Lions used a balanced attack in the three-game sweep. Taylor Floyd, Katy Floyd and Anna Katherine Griggs combined for 24 kills as UNA set a new single-match Division I-era team record by hitting .470 against the Skyhawks.
 
The Lions led wire-to-wire in each set, opening the match with 15 kills and a .583 showing in the first game. UNA held Stonehill to single digits in the second set before closing out the match with a 25-14 victory.
 
Taylor Floyd led the Lions with nine kills. Kennedey Johnson paced the offensive attack with a career-high 48 assists. Defensively, libero Ella Ratzloff turned in a match-high seven digs.
 
Against the host Bulldogs, Griggs led the way with 12 kills. The senior from Arab hit .524 for the match and added four digs and three blocks.
 
After two quick victories, UNA trailed in a set for the first time on the year when UNCA grabbed a 14-13 lead in the third frame. The Lions responded with four straight points and never trailed again.
 
Katy Floyd added 11 kills while Johnson turned in 39 assists. Ella Ratzloff recorded a match-high 16 digs. Taylor Floyd also reached double figures with 14 digs.
 
North Alabama will return home to host the 2022 UNA Volleyball Classic next weekend. The Lions will play three matches Sept. 2-3 at Flowers Hall, beginning Friday at noon against Grambling.
