UNA VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO KENNESAW STATE IN ASUN OPENER

KENNESAW, Ga., – The University of North Alabama volleyball team opened ASUN Conference play on Friday with a 3-1 loss at Kennesaw State. The 10-25, 25-27, 25-23, 21-25 loss gives the Lions a 10-3 overall record with a 0-1 start to league action.
Four players reached double digits in kills for the Owls, who dominated the opening set before holding off UNA in the next three close games. In the second frame, UNA reached set point first with a 24-23 lead. KSU, however, rallied by scoring four of the next five points to get the win.

The Lions were able to stay alive with a win in the third set. After leading throughout the game, UNA had to hold off a late rally by the Owls. After KSU took a 23-22 lead, kills by Hayley Martin and Elif Ozsoy put the Lions ahead 24-23. An attack error on the home team then ended the game and forced another set.

The fourth set featured 10 ties before the home team was able to pull away. After a kill by the Owls tied the score at 19-19, Kennesaw State added three more points to grab a 22-19 lead. A kill by AK Griggs stopped the scoring run, but KSU notched the last two points to close out the match.

Martin led UNA with 14 kills. Taylor Floyd added 13 kills while Ozsoy recorded 36 assists. Defensively, Ella Ratzloff turned in 20 digs on the night.

Four players reached double figures for Kennesaw State, including a match-high 16 kills by Emma Schurfranz.

UNA will play at Jacksonville State on Saturday. Match time is set for 4 p.m. at Pete Matthews Coliseum on the JSU campus.
