SOFTBALL LIONS SWEEP GAMES AT ROAR CITY TOURNAMENT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of North Alabama softball team swept its games on the opening day of the Roar City Invitational, taking a 12-0 run-rule win over Bradley before dowing host Tennessee State 2-1.

The Lions will continue play in the tournament with a 10:00 a.m. game against Bradley on Sunday and a 2:00 p.m. game against Alabama A&M.

UNA, now 5-0, got its third straight run-rule win of the season in the win over Bradley. The Lions scored one run in the first inning and added two in the second, four in the third and five in the fifth for a 12-0 advantage.

UNA starter Maci Birdyshaw followed up four shutout innings in her first appearance of the season with a complete-game shutout of Bradley, allowing just three hits in improving to 2-0. She did not walk anyone and struckout 10 batters.

Felicity Frame led the Lions offensively, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and a run batted in. Mckenzie Patterson scored three runs and Hailey Jones, Haven Kirby and Ryleigh Boyett scored two each. The Lions finished with 12 hits in the game.

In UNA's second game of the day against Tennessee State,  UNA got runs in the second and fifth innings for a 2-0 advantage. The first run came when Boyett walked and scored on a Taylor Brown double.

The Lions' second run was scored by Felicity Frame  after she reached on an error and later scored on a Georgia Land sacrifice fly.

Elena Escobar started for UNA and got the win to improve to 2-0. She pitched six complete innings, allowing one run on three hits. She walked two and struckout seven. TSU's run came in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it a one-run game. Sophie Golliver came on to earn the save in the seventh inning, allowing one run and one hit before ending the threat.

UNA had just four hits in the second game.
