FLORENCE, Ala. -- The University of North Alabama baseball team used a three-run seventh inning and some shut-down pitching by
Jacob James to pull out an 11-10 win over Austin Peay at Mike Land Field in the first game of a three-game ASUN Conference series.
North Alabama recorded its fourth straight win despite trailing 10-8 going to the bottom of the seventh. The Lions got two walks before
Drew Hudson tied the game with a two-run single.
Levi Jensen then doubled in Hudson to give UNA an 11-10 lead.
Jacob James then came on in relief for the Lions and, after walking the first batter that he faced, retired the next six in a row to earn his second save of the season.
The four straight wins are the most consecutive victories by a Lion baseball team in UNA's five seasons in Division I. Â
Carson Howard (3-1) got the win in relief of starter
Jacob Bradshaw. Howard allowed two runs on one hit in an inning and a third of work.
Both teams scored two runs each in the third inning, with UNA's two coming on a two-run single by
Kyle Machado.
Austin Peay scored three more in the fourth for a 5-2 lead but UNA answered with six in the bottom of the fifth for its first lead. The Lions had six straight batters reach base with Machado contributing an RBI-single,
Andrew Knight a two-run triple,
Dominick McIntyre an RBI-double and Hudson with an RBI on a sacrifice bunt. McIntyre scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.
Austin Peay tied the game at 8-8 in the sixth with a three-run home run from Lyle Miller-Green, then took a 10-8 with two more runs in the seventh.
With the win, North Alabama is now 13-36 overall and 7-21 in the ASUN. It was also UNA's first conference win at home this season.
The Lions and Governors continue the series tomorrow at 6:00 p.m.
