NOTES

LAST TIME OUT: The Lions improved to 2-0 and won its 14th consecutive home opener with a 94-58 win over Point University on Thursday. UNA had four players in double figures, led by sophomore Canin Jefferson with a career-high 14 points. Junior Jacari Lane and senior Will Soucie added 13, while true freshman Kevin de Kovachich added 11 points over 16 minutes. Three-thousand fans packed CB&S Bank Arena for Elementary Day with students representing 14 local schools.

SCOUTING THE LIONS: UNA returns six players from last season to go with nine newcomers. This team is the seventh for UNA since making the move to Division I in 2018. Tony Pujol has been the coach for all seven of those seasons and is coming off the best two-year stretch in the program's Division I history with 33 wins.

SCOUTING THE SKYHAWKS: UT Martin has a 2-0 record following a tight road win at Illinois State and a dominant 114-61 win over Kentucky Christian in the home opener — also an 11 a.m. education day game. UTM is off to its fifth 2-0 start since joining Division I ranks in 1992. Junior guard Josue Grullon, a second team NJCCA All-American last season at Daytona State, is averaging 18.5 points per game over the first two outings to go with 7.0 rebounds per game. First year head coach Jeremy Shulman had just one player return from last season, but he and 16 newcomers are already off to a 2-0 start. The Skyhawks finished 21-11 last season.

SERIES HISTORY: On Monday, UNA and UT Martin will meet for just the second time in 33 years. UNA leads the all-time series with a 29-23 record, as the two sides played in 1949 and resumed the series regularly until 1991. The 1990-91 season was an important one for both programs, as the Lions won the NCAA Division II National Championship that season and UT Martin left the Gulf South Conference to begin its journey at the Division I level.

RENEWING THE RIVALRY: Last season, UNA traveled to UT Martin on the day before Thanksgiving and treated the daytime crowd to a double overtime thriller. However, the Skyhawks edged the Lions 105-103 in a game that had 11 lead changes in the second half. This was UNA's first double overtime game since the 1985-86 season against Athens State.

WELCOME BACK TO FLORENCE: The last time UT Martin played in Flowers Hall (now CB&S Bank Arena) was in the 1990-91 season. The Lions won 90-58 and swept the season series with an 89-79 road win in Martin. UNA went on to finish 29-4 that season and won the national title under UNA Hall of Fame coach Gary Elliott.

THE LANE GAME: Jacari Lane shot 9-15 from the floor and 5-6 behind the arc at Air Force last Monday, totaling 24 points. He added 13 points on Thursday against Point with limited minutes. Lane — the only 2024 First Team All-ASUN selection to return to the league this season —has scored double-figures in 26 of his last 34 games and has scored at least 20 points eight times in that span.

HOWELL ON EARTH: Fifth-year senior Dallas Howell, who has played in 96 career games for UNA, went 5-8 behind the arc at Air Force last Monday to finish with 17 points. Perhaps the most thrilling of his triples came at the buzzer to end the first half, putting the Lions up 43-22. Howell has had 13 games with double figure scoring since the start of last season.

KENPOM JUMPERS: Last week entering the Air Force game, the Lions were ranked No. 215 in the KenPom preseason ratings. After leading wire-to-wire in a 16-point road win over the Falcons — who were No. 208 — the Lions beat Point and now rank No. 168. There are 364 basketball teams in NCAA Division I.

FLO-TOWN MAGIC: On Thursday, UNA won its 14th straight home opener dating back to 2010. The Lions are 27-3 in non-conference home games since moving to Division I in 2018.

MONEY IN THE BANK: UNA has a 529-185 all-time record inside CB&S Bank Arena at Flowers Hall, which is a 74.0 win percentage. At the Division I level, the Lions have a 51-26 record at home. The Lions scored over 1,000 points at home last season while allowing just 922.
