Ossai receives rookie minicamp invite from Atlanta Falcons

Former UNA defensive lineman looks to make mark in NFL

ATLANTA (April 29, 2024) – Former University of North Alabama defensive lineman Philip Ossai got a much-anticipated phone call on Monday, as Ossai announced the Atlanta Falcons have invited him to attend their 2024 Rookie Minicamp.

Ossai was a second team all-conference selection in the United Athletic Conference this past season, representing the Lions with 63 tackles, a team-high 9.5 tackles for loss and a team-high four sacks. He also had five quarterback hurries, two fumble recoveries and a pair of pass breakups.

The NFL has two windows for teams to hold rookie minicamps, including May 3-6 and May 10-13.

"Always put 110 percent of effort into everything you do, because it translates to all parts of your life — whether it be football, the classroom or your relationships in life," said Ossai. "Put your trust in God and see what wonders he does in your life. I want to thank UNA for giving me an opportunity to play the game I love. The community of North Alabama took me in with open arms, as well as allowing me the honor to represent the historically rich football team by wearing the number 44. For that, I will be forever grateful."

In his first season at UNA, Ossai wore the No. 48 in honor of his brother and current Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Joseph Ossai. But last season, he was approached to wear a different number.

Ossai wore No. 44 in 2023, which is given to UNA's leader on defense. The number was worn by UNA Hall of Famer Ronald McKinnon, who won the 1995 Harlon Hill Trophy and went on to a near-decade long NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals and New Orleans Saints.

"We are thrilled for Phil," said UNA head coach Brent Dearmon. "He is the perfect example of a UNA Lion both on and off the field. We are fire up that he gets to continue chasing his dream."

Back on December 10, Ossai competed in the FCS National Bowl in Daytona Beach and finished with eight tackles, including five solo, with 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss. For his performance, the Conroe, Texas native also got invited to the FBS All-Americans Tropical Bowl in January, attracting a number of NFL scouts.

"We loved coaching Phil," said UNA defensive coordinator Brock Caraboa. "He came to work every single day with great attitude and effort. There was a reason he wore number 44. He has made all of the Purple Swarm proud."
