Women’s Basketball gears up for road contests in Tennessee

Lions set for ASUN road swing against Govs and Bisons

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (January 22, 2025) – The University of North Alabama women's basketball team has a two-game road swing in Atlantic Sun Conference play this week, facing the Austin Peay Governors and Lipscomb Bisons in nearby Tennessee.

North Alabama hits the road to Clarksville and Nashville this weekend, taking on Govs for the second time this season and the Bisons for the first meeting this season. The Lions look to continue rolling after two wins versus Stetson and North Florida last time out. UNA, Austin Peay and Lipscomb are all currently in the top five of the ASUN standings.

The Austin Peay matchup will tip off Thursday night from F&M Bank Arena at 6 p.m., while the Lions face Lipscomb on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 2 p.m. from Allen Arena. Both games will be available for streaming on ESPN+ and live stats will be provided courtesy of SIDEARM at Austin Peay and StatBroadcast at Lipscomb.

NOTES


LAST TIME OUT: North Alabama went 2-0 in its previous homestand with victories versus Stetson and North Florida in CB&S Bank Arena. The Lions opened with a 75-57 victory over the Hatters and followed with a 65-54 result against the Ospreys. The wins snapped a two-game skid and moved UNA into a tie for fourth in the ASUN standings with Austin Peay.

SCOUTING THE LIONS:
In conference play, the Lions trio of Charity Gallegos, Alyssa Clutter and India Howard has led the way statistically through six games. Gallegos leads the team with 14.5 PPG during ASUN play, with Clutter averaging 10.7 PPG and 7.2 RPG from the guard position. Howard has averaged a near double-double during the conference games with 8.3 PPG and 9.3 RPG.

SCOUTING AUSTIN PEAY:
 The Governors face the Lions at home, looking to sweep the series after a 75-57 win in Florence. They enter with a 9-8 record while 4-2 in the ASUN. The Govs are tied for fourth in the ASUN standings with North Alabama. Austin Peay looks to get back in the win column after falling to Jacksonville, 65-61, last time out.

SERIES HISTORY: The Lions and Governors meet for the second time this season but ninth all time in the series. Austin Peay evened the series on Jan. 8 as both teams have a 4-4 series record. The last contest in Clarksville resulted in a 59-58 win for UNA on Feb. 24, 2024, using an India Howard tip-in buzzer beater to clinch the win.

SCOUTING LIPSCOMB:
 The Bisons face the Lions in the second of their two-game homestand. Lipscomb holds the second spot in the ASUN standings, entering the weekend with a 12-5 overall record and a 5-1 record in conference. The Bisons were chosen as a top-three preseason pick in the ASUN, with Lipscomb voted third in both the media and coaches preseason poll. The Bisons are currently on a three-game win streak with wins over West Georgia, Jacksonville and Queens. Lipscomb is coached by Lauren Sumski in her sixth season.

SERIES HISTORY: The Lions meet Lipscomb for the 28th all-time matchup on Saturday. The Bisons lead the series, 19-8. UNA looks for its first win over Lipscomb since the 2021-22 season.

CHARITY'S CASE:
Charity Gallegos leads North Alabama in scoring, averaging 13.5 points per game to rank tied for ninth in the ASUN. Gallegos has also been the primary playmaker for the Lions, averaging the fourth-most assists in the ASUN with 3.9 per game. She was named the ASUN Conference's Player and Newcomer of the Week on Dec. 30, 2024 after a 25-7-7 stat line against Bethel.

BOUND FOR REBOUNDS:
The Lions are first in the Atlantic Sun Conference in total rebounds, averaging 42.3 per game. North Alabama holds the top spot in rebounding margin (+7.1), is second in defensive rebounds (28.9 per game) and third in offensive rebounds (13.4 per game). India Howard (8th/7.2 RPG), Jazzy Klinge (14th/5.8 RPG) and Alyssa Clutter (16th/5.7 RPG) all rank top 20 in the ASUN rebounding ranks. UNA's effort on the glass is also among the top 25 teams nationally, ranking 19th in rebounds per game and 24th in defensive rebounds per game.

LEADERBOARD LIONS:
In addition to rebounding, North Alabama is among the top three ASUN teams in free throw percentage and assists. The Lions are third in free throw percentage at 72.6 percent and third in assists with 14 per game.

DOUBLE TROUBLE:
North Alabama has had two players finish with double-doubles this season in Howard and Clutter. Howard has four, recently adding two more against Stetson and North Florida. The junior averaged 10 points and 14 rebounds in the two games against the Hatters and Ospreys. Clutter has two with a 14-point, 11-rebound outing at Arkansas-Pine Bluff and 17 points and 17 rebounds at Bellarmine.

HOWARD HOLDS IT DOWN:
Junior India Howard has had a knack for blocking shots, enforcing her defensive presence with 24 blocks in 17 games. She's currently fourth in the conference in the category with 1.4 blocks per game. Howard is also top 10 in rebounds in the conference, ranking eighth with 7.2 per game.

SUPER CAM:
Cameron Jones is having a career year in her third season, with the Broadview Heights, Ohio native averaging a career-high 9.7 points per game and 5.4 rebounds per game. Jones has set multiple single-game career highs on the season, including a 17-point performance against Denver and nine rebounds against both Nebraska and Bellarmine.
