PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. (April 2, 2025) – The University of North Alabama men's golf team rounded out the Golfweek/Any Given Tuesday Invite on Wednesday at the True Blue Golf Resort in Pawleys Island, S.C. in sole possession of fifth.
This was the final day of a three-day tournament playing only 18 holes. The Lions finished tied for sixth yesterday before besting Mercer by a stroke for fifth place. North Alabama went one-under for the day but St. John's won the tournament having a seven-under day to finish 23-under for the three rounds.
North Alabama finished one-over on par-3s for an average of 3.01, continuing their first-place pace from day two. They finished in third for birdies with 56, adding 17 more on the final day.
Junior Xing Luo had a resurgent tournament. He finished round one tied for 32nd, after round two he finished in 14th. In the final round, he jumped nine more spots to tie for fifth with a three-under day to be the highest ranked Lion. He totaled a three-under for par-3s with an average score of 2.80 to take second.
Luo finished with a seven-under three rounds and with a 209 overall score. The 209 is one stroke off of his last week's score at 208, where he won the ASUN Golfer of the Week after his performance for finishing in second.
Senior Chase Kaiser continued to chip away at the golfers in front of him as finished tied for eighth for the tournament. A six-under tournament for a 210 overall score marks his best as a Lion. He finished with a 70-69-71. His previous best was a 71-71-69 set earlier this spring at the Seminole Intercollegiate in Thomasville, Ga.
Both Luo's 209 three-round score and Kaiser's 210 three-round score tie for seventh and eighth, respectively, for an individual three-round tournament total.
Junior Blake Henriques had a nice tournament where he led the Lions for two straight days. On the final round he finished tied for 15th for the three days with a five-over, 213 overall score. This is Henriques' highest finish as a Lion; his previous best was 23rd at the 2024 Turtle Point Invite in Killen, Ala.
Sophomore Andrew Ferworn found his mojo by round three. He finished with a two-under on Wednesday to bill in a 70 overall score for the final round. He had a 221 overall score and moved up 20 spots in the final round for a tie in 56th. He tossed in five birdies for the afternoon, which matched his total for the first two rounds.
Junior Sebastian Bengtsson had a seven-over afternoon to finish his three rounds with a 229 total. He provided three birdies for the team.
St. John's closes out the tournament in first with a 23-under tournament for an 841 total. UConn was five strokes behind them with an 18-under three rounds to place second. Jacksonville State dropped two spots with a four-over day to place third.
Georgia State edged out North Alabama for the fourth spot with a 14-under tournament and a one-under day, identical to the Lions. UNA finished 13-under for the three rounds but one-under for the afternoon, besting Mercer by a stroke as they placed sixth.
Marshall jumped two spots with a two-under day to finish in seventh. Both Xavier and West Georgia dropped a spot to finish in eighth and ninth respectively. After that, the board does not move as Stephen F. Austin completes the top-10 with a two-over tournament.
Valparaiso, USC Upstate, SIUE, Fairleigh Dickinson, Long Island, Southern Indiana and Kansas City round out the rest of the tournament for the day with all shooting over for the tournament.
"We have to keep learning and growing," said The Schmitz Family Head Men's Golf Coach, Austin Phillips. "We will get ready for conference and figure some things out. Good playing by Xing and Chase to finish in the top-10; three solid rounds by both of those guys."
North Alabama has one final tournament before the ASUN Men's Golf Championship which is the Tiger Intercollegiate in Columbia, Mo. at The Club at Old Hawthorne starting Monday, April 7.
