NOTES

LAST TIME OUT: The University of North Alabama men's golf team concluded the ASUN Championship in fourth place on Thursday, April 24 at the Kinderlou Forest Golf Club. The fourth-place finish is the highest in the program's Division I history. The Schmitz Family Head Men's Golf Coach, Austin Phillips, finished seventh a season ago and saw his team raise three spots; this is the largest year-to-year jump for UNA in the ASUN Championship. Luo led the way as he rose three spots from seventh to fourth on the final day. Luo solidified a 69-70-70 three rounds for seven-under and had the highest finish for the Lions at fourth since Carter Goodwin's second place tie in 2022.

THE BREAKDOWN: The University of Auburn is playing with some home course advantage in this one at the Auburn University Club. A total of 13 teams compete with this being an NCAA site with 10 individuals; a total of 75 competitors for the three days. This a three-day tournament with 18 holes played each day. Luo begins his trek at 9:53 a.m. on the first tee box with No. 13 USC Upstate's No. 2 golfer and Arkansas State's Thomas Schmidt. The course is a par 72 at 7,607 yards.

THE FIELD: A total of 13 teams will participate in this tournament with 10 individuals. The teams include Auburn, Texas A&M, UCLA, SMU, Georgia Tech, Oregon, Purdue, Little Rock, TCU, Charleston, New Mexico State, Loyola Maryland and USC Upstate. Luo was the third individual selected in this group of 10: Louisana-Monroe's Louis Anceaux, Kennesaw State's Claes Borregaard, Arkansas State's Thomas Schmidt, Georgia Southern's Parker Claxton, Chattanooga's Camden Braidech, Memphis' Yixiang Wang, Arkansas State's Jack Maxey, Presbyterian' Jeep Patrick and UT Martin's Jonathan Xoinis.

'LUO'KING BACK ON THE YEAR: Luo had an incredible season as he finished as the highest ranked golfer in the Atlantic Sun Cinference at 143rd in the nation. He was voted to All-ASUN Second Team, ASUN All-Tournament Team and Academic All-ASUN after finishing fourth in the ASUN Championships in Valdosta, Ga. He won two individual titles this year while helping lead the Lions to two team tournament wins. He set the Division I school records for best individual round finish with a 65 at the Turtle Point Invite and the best three-round individual tournament finish at the GMAC Invitational with a 200 (-16). The junior took home four ASUN Golfer of the Week awards this season, the most for a career in school history.

LUO ON LOU: As mentioned, Luo had a terrific GMAC Invitational where he took home sole possession of an individual crown. However, it did not come easily as the team took home a shared tournament win. Who did the Lions tie with? The Warhawks of Louisiana-Monroe. Who did Luo have to battle for his tournament win? None other than Louisana-Monroe's Louis Anceaux. The Warhawk shot an impressive 14-under for the tournament and had possession of the lead until Luo shot six-under the final day to come from behind. The two will give it a go once again in the same NCAA Regional.

SEASONS OF FIRSTS: Luo adds onto a historic season for the Lions. The junior becomes the first North Alabama golfer to compete in the NCAA Division I Golf Regionals as an individual. This season, UNA also added the first ASUN individual champion in cross country runner Brian Bett. UNA Men's Basketball won the first regular season team championship in school history. UNA Men's Tennis won the first ASUN tournament championship in school history while also being the first UNA team selected for an NCAA Division I Championship. Year seven of the Division I transition has been fruitful for the Lions, and Luo slides in to create his own history.
