NOTES

LAST TIME OUT: The University of North Alabama men's golf team took home the team title at the GMAC Invitational for the second straight season on Tuesday, Sept. 23. The Lions finished two-over par at Limestone Springs Golf Course in Oneonta, Ala. for a total score of 842. Junior Andrew Ferworn posted a final round 63 (-7), sinking eight birdies. His score is the lowest individual round in UNA's Division I history, surpassing current teammate Xing Luo. Luo previously tied the school record with a 65 during the third round of the 2024 Turtle Point Invite. Ferworn totaled 17 birdies over the tournament and surged 19 spots on the final day to finish in second place. His 205 score is the fourth-best Division I three round individual tournament total and becomes his second career best — behind his 203 set at the 2024 Turtle Point Invite.

FIRST PLACE FERWORN: Ferworn took home second in the most previous tournament, but a season ago he took home a first-place victory at the upcoming course. The then-sophomore, shared the individual crown with Kennesaw State's Claes Borregaard — Borreagaard eventually made it to the NCAA Regionals as an individual during the spring. On a difficult course, Ferworn finished the tournament with a five-over-par 218-stroke score after three rounds. He totaled nine birdies on the weekend while finishing each of the first nine holes under par or even. Ferworn was one of only eight players to shoot par or better in a round, carding a 71 in the second round. Only two golfers carded a 70 to finish one below par on the difficult par-71 course. He followed this performance up with another win at the Turtle Point Invite. For now, Ferworn returns a year later where he took home an individual win for the first time in his career.

THE BREAKDOWN: Kentucky is the host school for the tournament, where 15 teams will compete. North Alabama tees off on Oct. 7 starting at 9 a.m. by way of a shotgun start. The course is a par 71 and spans 7,255 yards. North Alabama will be paired with golfers from Memphis and Western Kentucky for the first two rounds on holes 10 through 12. Round three will be a 9 a.m. shotgun start but will be repaired by score.

THE FIELD: A total of 15 teams will participate in this tournament. A lot of power-4 programs are in the mix alongside the host school Kentucky. Mississippi State, Cincinnati, Michigan, West Virginia, NC State, Penn State and Virginia Tech headline that front. Mid-major programs like former ASUN member Kennesaw State join the group with Toledo, Memphis and WKU in the mix. Lastly, ASUN members Lipscomb and Eastern Kentucky compete with the Lions in this one. Last season, Kentucky hosted only five of these teams in WKU, EKU, Kennesaw State, Toledo and North Alabama. Tennessee and Vanderbilt joined with individuals amongst the field.

10x WINNER: The GMAC Invitational was a special one for the team — not only because it was a nail biter but that it was their 10th team crown during the Division I era and the fifth-under current The Schmitz Family head coach Austin Phillips. The Lions' first championship season in the Division I era came in Spring 2019 where they won their first tournament at the North Alabama Spring Classic. UNA has seven wins during the fall semester and three during the spring; the other two spring wins came at the 2023 Gulf Coast Collegiate and the 2024 Savannah Intercollegiate. Currently, Phillips is one win shy of his personal record of 10 NCAA wins. He had four at Division II Cameron University and has five with North Alabama at the Division I level.
