NOTES

LAST TIME OUT: North Alabama last played over a week ago, falling to Queens by an 87-62 final in Charlotte. This improved Queens to 7-0 in conference play, remaining the final undefeated team in league games until a loss to West Georgia this past Saturday. The Lions used a different starting lineup as both DarKaun King and Braylon Patton earned their first career starts. Patton scored 10 points and finished his first career dunk in his first start.

SCOUTING THE LIONS: UNA has a 6-12 overall record and a 1-6 record in league play. UNA will look to snap a three-game skid with the most recent win coming on Jan. 10 at Bellarmine. The Lions have four players averaging double figures and three that average roughly 13 points per game — Corneilous Williams, Donte Bacchus and Canin Jefferson. Williams remains the top rebounder in the league at 9.5 PPG.

SCOUTING THE EAGLES: FGCU has an 8-13 overall record and a 2-6 record in conference play following losses to Austin Peay and Lipscomb on the road last week. The Eagles are among the top six offensive and defensive teams in the league despite their tough start, averaging 80.0 PPG and allowing 79.9 PPG for a near-even margin. Graduate forward J.R. Konieczny leads the team with 15.7 PPG.

SERIES HISTORY VS. FGCU: UNA has an 8-7 record in the all-time series and will look to keep FGCU away from a series tie on Thursday. UNA went 2-0 against FGCU in the early stages of the Eagles program in 2004 and 2005 — both teams playing as members of NCAA Division II at the time. UNA has a 4-1 record at home against FGCU with the first loss coming earlier this season.

SCOUTING THE HATTERS: Stetson has a 7-14 overall record and a 3-5 record in ASUN play. The Hatters have won six of their seven games at home this season. However, the Hatters are looking to snap a three-game skid this week following losses to Queens, Lipscomb and Austin Peay. The Hatters average 72.0 PPG but average 77.3 PPG in league play. Jamie Phillips is the leading scorer for Stetson with 16.0 PPG, but has not played the last three games. Ethan Copeland leads the active players with 12.6 PPG.

SERIES HISTORY VS. STETSON: Stetson has a 9-4 record against the Lions, including a 70-67 win on New Year's Day inside CB&S Bank Arena. UNA won both meetings last season and will look to avoid a season sweep on Saturday. Last year in DeLand, UNA dominated Stetson with a 92-64 victory that saw Taye Fields collect 23 points and 17 rebounds, reaching double-double territory just 14 minutes into the game.

ICE STORM TROOPERS: After playing Queens on Wednesday, UNA announced its game against Central Arkansas that Saturday had been moved to Feb. 9 to avoid the inclement weather that affected much of the Southeast. This gave UNA eight days away from action. Each of the next four games will be on the road, meaning UNA will have 23 days between home games.

WATCH WILLIAMS: Corneilous Williams ranks atop the ASUN with 9.5 rebounds per game. He currently ranks 27th in the NCAA in rebounds per game and 14th in offensive rebounding with nearly four per game. He is also one of 48 players in the NCAA with seven or more double-doubles.

SIX YEARS, NEW HEIGHTS: Earlier this month, sixth-year senior Dallas Howell passed Jamari Blackmon for the second-most career Division I games in a Lion uniform in a start against North Florida. One game prior to that, Howell scored a career-high 24 points in a win over Bellarmine.

SIX YEARS OF HOWELL: Howell has been with the program since 2020, earning a COVID season and an injury redshirt last season. He is one of just seven known players in Division I this season to play for six seasons. However, Howell is the only one of those seven to do it at the same school. The other schools with a sixth-year player include Oklahoma, Iowa State, USC, Texas, Bowling Green and Tarleton State.

CARDIAC LIONS: Last season, UNA finished with an 0-8 record when trailing at halftime. All 24 wins came when tying or ahead at the break. This season, however, UNA has a 4-8 record when trailing at the break, including a 33-32 deficit at the break against Bellarmine. UNA also overcame halftime deficits against Jax State, San Francisco and Lane College.

TRENDS TO WATCH: UNA is 5-2 when outscoring opponents in the paint and 6-1 when outrebounding opponents this season. The Lions, oddly, are 1-4 when shooting over 40 percent behind the arc while 5-8 when shooting under 40 percent.

TEAM STRENGTHS: The Lions rank among the top 100 teams in the NCAA for fewest fouls per game (38th), blocks per game (75th) and fewest turnovers per game (80th).

SHOWING UP: UNA looks to lead the ASUN in average attendance for a second straight season, currently averaging 2,300 fans per game. The Lions averaged 2,367 fans per game last season, ranking ahead of FGCU and Lipscomb in second and third, respectively. FGCU is currently second this season with 1,661 fans per game.
