NOTES

LAST TIME OUT: North Alabama picked up a pivotal road win to end the month of January with a 68-66 win over Stetson. The game included eight lead changes, although UNA held a tight lead for 32 minutes. Canin Jefferson, who had 10 points and 10 assists for his first career double-double, made a free throw with 15 seconds to go to make it 68-66. Stetson rebounded the second shot and had one last possession and no timeout, but missed a go-ahead three at the buzzer following a strong defensive stand by UNA. Donte Bacchus finished with a career-high 23 points.

SCOUTING THE LIONS: UNA has a 7-13 overall record and a 2-7 record in league play following a road split at FGCU and Stetson. The Lions have four players averaging double figures and three that average over 13 points per game — Corneilous Williams, Donte Bacchus and Canin Jefferson. Williams remains the top rebounder in the ASUN at 9.5 PPG. UNA ranks among the top 100 teams in the ASUN for fewest fouls (37th), fewest turnovers (93rd) and most blocks per game (73rd).

SCOUTING THE BEARS: Central Arkansas is perhaps the most-improved team in the ASUN this season, owning a 12-10 overall record and a 7-2 record in the ASUN to sit among the top three teams in the league. The Bears are averaging 80.0 PPG to rank sixth in the ASUN in scoring and rank third in the league with 74.9 PPG allowed. UCA is second in the ASUN for conference game scoring with 85.2 PPG. Camren Hunter ranks third in the league with 21.9 PPG in conference play. John Shulman, former head coach at UAH and Chattanooga, is in his second season building the program at UCA.

SERIES HISTORY: UNA leads the all-time series with an 11-4 record dating back to 1994. The Lions are on a three-game win streak against UCA, including a season sweep last season. UNA has also won five of the last six dating back to 2023. The Lions have an impressive 5-2 record in Conway, as UCA seeks its first home win over UNA since 2022. The two sides played seven times during the Division II era as members of the Gulf South Conference. UNA went 6-1 against UCA during that era.

ICE STORM TROOPERS: Just before tipoff at Queens on Jan. 21, the ASUN approved the rescheduling of UNA's game at home against Central Arkansas from Jan. 24 to Feb. 9 due to the ice storms that affected much of the Southeast region. As a result, UNA had eight days between the Queens game and the FGCU game. In this current stretch, UNA will play five straight road games with 23 days between home games. The Feb. 9 game will be a black out at CB&S Bank Arena.

WATCH WILLIAMS: Corneilous Williams ranks atop the ASUN with 9.5 rebounds per game. He currently ranks 26th in the NCAA in rebounds per game and 13th in offensive rebounding with nearly four per game. He is also one of 38 players in the NCAA with eight or more double-doubles.

SIX YEARS, NEW HEIGHTS: Earlier this month, sixth-year senior Dallas Howell passed Jamari Blackmon for the second-most career Division I games in a Lion uniform in a start against North Florida. One game prior to that, Howell scored a career-high 24 points in a win over Bellarmine. He recently scored 18 points and had a career-high four blocks in the win over Stetson.

SIX YEARS OF HOWELL: Howell has been with the program since 2020, earning a COVID season and an injury redshirt last season. He is one of just seven known players in Division I this season to play for six seasons. However, Howell is the only one of those seven to do it at the same school. The other schools with a sixth-year player include Oklahoma, Iowa State, USC, Texas, Bowling Green and Tarleton State.

CAJUN-SIZED GAME: New Orleans native Canin Jefferson finished with 10 points and a career-high 10 assists in a 68-66 win over Stetson last Saturday. Jefferson became the first Lion to reach 10 assists since Jacari Lane last season against Bellarmine. Lane also holds the Division I school record of 11 assists, set Dec. 3, 2023 at Kansas State.

CARDIAC LIONS: Last season, UNA finished with an 0-8 record when trailing at halftime. All 24 wins came when tying or ahead at the break. This season, however, UNA has a 4-9 record when trailing at the break, including a 33-32 deficit at the break against Bellarmine. UNA also overcame halftime deficits against Jax State, San Francisco and Lane College.

TRENDS TO WATCH: UNA is 6-2 when outscoring opponents in the paint and 6-1 when outrebounding opponents this season. The Lions, oddly, are 1-4 when shooting over 40 percent behind the arc while 6-8 when shooting under 40 percent. UNA shot just 28.6 percent from three in the win over Stetson, going 6-21.

SHOWING UP: UNA looks to lead the ASUN in average attendance for a second straight season, currently averaging 2,300 fans per game. The Lions averaged 2,367 fans per game last season, ranking ahead of FGCU and Lipscomb in second and third, respectively. UCA is also one of eight teams in the ASUN averaging over 1,000 fans per game.
