FLORENCE, Ala. (June 12, 2026) – University of North Alabama head football coach
Brent Dearmon added an NFL talent to his defensive coaching staff on Friday, officially naming
Jovante Moffatt as the safeties coach.
Moffatt comes to the Shoals fresh off a solid NFL career that included stints with the Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, Atlanta Falcons and Arizona Cardinals. Prior to his NFL career, he played safety at Middle Tennessee from 2015-19 and finished as the fifth all-time leading tackler with 313 total tackles.
Moffatt also set the record for most career games at Middle Tennessee with 55 over his five seasons. In 2015 — his true freshman season — he was one of two NFL talents on the defense along with All-Pro safety Kevin Byard.
UNA will be Moffatt's first coaching position following his NFL career.
"We are blessed to add
Jovante Moffatt," said Dearmon, who enters his fourth season at UNA. "His college and NFL experience will be a huge asset to the development of our defensive backfield. Jovante was a leader as a player at MTSU and all his former coaches speak extremely highly of his character."
Following a standout career at Union City High School in Tennessee, Moffatt took his talents to Murfreesboro and played five seasons. He played four games as a senior and redshirted to recover from an offseason surgery but otherwise played in every game over four full seasons.
After Middle Tennessee, Moffatt signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent in 2020 and played his first two seasons with the franchise. This later led to the Jets, Falcons and the Cardinals up until his recent retirement.
"I am incredibly honored and excited to begin my coaching career at the University of North Alabama," said Moffatt. "Football has always been a passion of mine, and I'm eager to learn, grow and contribute to a culture of excellence both on and off the field."
