FLORENCE, Ala. (August 30, 2026) – The University of North Alabama women's soccer team earned a 2-1 win over SEMO on Sunday afternoon at the Cox Creek Sports Complex to complete an undefeated August.
North Alabama (3-0-1) used a first half goal from midfielder Monica Yoder in the 14th minute to equalize the game, 1-1. Captain Charlotte Sobotka scored her first goal of the season in the 63rd minute, which became the game-winner.
These two became the ninth and 10th different goal scorers this season for North Alabama.
This is the first time since the 2022 season that North Alabama has finished the August slate unbeaten. That season, UNA beat Jackson State (2-0), Belmont (2-0) and tied South Alabama (1-1) and Troy (0-0) for a 2-0-2 record. The Lions went 5-0 in 2018 for the best record of the Division I era through the month of August.
Southeast Missouri St. (1-2-1) earned a goal in the ninth minute of the game from Rachel Kretzer but were held quiet by the Lion defense for the remaining 81 minutes of action. The Redhawks mustered just six shots with only two on goal.
North Alabama moves to 2-0 all-time against SEMO with wins last season (3-0) and today.
North Alabama had its second 20-plus shot night of the season with 22 total shots. The Lions also accomplished their second double-digit corner kick game with 10 — SEMO did not get a corner kick opportunity today.
Maya Kelsch, Alana Owens and reigning UAC Player of the Week Anna Fuagrino led the team in shots with three each.
The Lion have scored double-digit goals each game this season. Today marks the third-straight game that UNA has posted double-digit shots, as well.
Meg Welsh, Gizelle El Assal and captain Lilly Ford added an assist each for the game. Ford had a free kick that set up Sobotka while Welsh delivered inside the box to El Assal before she passed to Yoder for the score. El Assal tied Gracie Tyrrell for the most assists on the team this season with three.
Dorfman had one save of the two shots that made it on target, as the backline helped block one Redhawk shot.
After this win, head coach Chris Walker notched the 108th win of his career. He now sits four wins away from becoming the all-time winningest coach in North Alabama history.
Through 10 different goal scorers, 13 goals have found the net in just four games; an average of 3.25 goals per game. A total of 18 goals were scored during the 19 games played in the 2025 campaign. Outside of the UNC Asheville game, the Lions have not allowed more than one goal in the previous three matchups.
With the 91 degree heat at kick, Walker heavily relied on his rotations for the third win of the season.
Twenty Lions found playing time in this one as the backline, comprised of Avery Smith, Adelyn Speight, Ford and Tyrrell, played all 90 minutes; Dorfman was in goal for the entirety of the match. Five freshman joined action in starter Maya Kelsch, Cara Pitzer, Haddie Patterson, Carolyn Federlee and Catherine Schneiderhahn.
North Alabama gets the opportunity to compete out West this next week for the first time in school history. The Lions play in Riverside, Calif. against California Baptist at CBU Soccer Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 9 p.m.
