NOTES
LAST TIME OUT: Last season, the North Alabama men's golf program achieved a program first, as the team earned its first NCAA Division I postseason berth at the Golfweek National Golf Invitational. The three-day postseason tournament held in Maricopa, Ariz. saw the Lions finish ninth with four seniors in Xing Luo, Sebastian Bengtsson, Blake Henriques and Corey Maher concluding their playing career. Former Lion Andrew Ferworn earned the second consecutive invitation to participate in the NCAA Men's Golf Regionals in Athens, Ga. as an individual. The team had two crown wins at the GMAC Invitational and Turtle Point Invite while finishing 109th in the nation.
THE BREAKDOWN: Coastal Carolina is hosting the tournament that will see 16 programs over three days. The tournament follows a split tee time start from the first and 10th holes. The course is a par 72 and spans 7,546 yards with a tee time of 7 a.m. CT.
THE FIELD: A total of 16 teams will participate in this tournament. Three ASUN teams accompany the Lions in this one in Stetson, Jacksonville and Lipscomb. Former ASUN conference members in Jacksonville State and Kennesaw State are competing, as well. Outside of the host school Coastal Carolina, FAU, Elon, Appalachian State, East Carolina, Campbell, Illinois State, Winthrop, UNCW and UTSA have teams in the tournament.
YOUNGSTERS: The Lions may be the youngest squad across the NCAA with no rostered upperclassmen for the 2026-27 season. The team is comprised of four freshman and four sophomores. North Alabama boasts three returners in sophomores Jedd Brady, Luke Davis and Arthur Estas. Newly hired Schmitz Family Head Men's Golf Coach Matt Terry brought in three of his own additions in sophomore transfer Lucas Latimer alongside freshman signees Jack Morris and Will Hindemit. Freshmen Caden Clark and Anton Hedliden were signed ahead of Terry taking the helm of the program. Last season, the Chattanooga Mocs were widely recognized as the youngest starting lineup in Division I golf with two freshmen, two sophomores and a junior. The Lions are starting three sophomores and two freshmen for this first tournament.
TERRY TIME: Terry took over for Austin Phillips after his departure for Old Dominion this summer. Prior to North Alabama, Terry spent nine seasons at CUSA Louisiana Tech but had a great reason for taking the Lions head coaching gig. The longtime head coach is a native of Moulton, Ala. just a short drive away from Florence. He has strong ties to the state of Alabama with 15 years spent with the Troy Trojans with three more seasons at Shelton State in Tuscaloosa. Terry led Troy to a Sun Belt conference title and even had multiple Bulldogs make NCAA individual appearances.
