CLEVELAND, Tenn., – After rallying to win the opening set, the University of North Alabama volleyball team added two more convincing wins to complete the road sweep over Lee. The 25-23, 25-19, 25-22 victory gives the Lions an 18-6 overall record and 11-2 mark in Gulf South Conference play.
UNA trailed 20-15 in the first set before beginning the comeback. After a kill by Peyton Lang tied the score at 21-21, the Flames briefly regained the lead by a single point. The Lions, however, got a solo block from Lexie Bradley followed by a double block by Lang and Jessica Austin to grab their first lead of the night at 23-22 and prompt a Lee timeout. The two teams traded points before UNA won the set on a Lee service error.
North Alabama jumped out to a 7-1 lead and never looked back in the second set. The Lions hit .262 as a team while Natasha Fomina had four kills to lead the team.
In the final set, the Lions again led wire to wire to complete the sweep. Four different players had two kills each while Ashtyn Kapovich recorded four service aces.
Fomina hit .500 on the night and finished with 11 kills. Andrea De Leon added 30 assists while Kapovich turned in a team-best eight digs for UNA. Lee (8-13 overall, 4-8 GSC) was led by Silvia Sartori, who recorded a match-high 14 kills.
UNA will play at Shorter Saturday afternoon in another key GSC showdown. Match time is set for 2 p.m. (EST) on the SU campus in Rome, Ga.
