VOLLEYBALL CLINCHES NO. 2 SEED WITH 3-1 WIN AT VSU

VALDOSTA, Ga., – Natasha Fomina had 28 kills to lead the University of North Alabama volleyball team to a 3-1 win Sunday afternoon at Valdosta State. The 25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19 victory secured the No. 2 seed and first-round by in next week's Gulf South Conference Tournament.

The 27 kills was a new career-high for Fomina, a junior from Broomfield, Colo. She added six digs, one assist, one service ace and a .500 hitting percentage on the day.

With the win, UNA closes the regular season with a 24-7 overall record and 17-3 mark in GSC play. The Lions also secured the season sweep over the Blazers. No. 22 West Florida won top seed and the right to host the conference tourney.

Against the Blazers, UNA won the first two sets by identical scores. After VSU rallied to win the third set and avoid the sweep, the Lions raced out to a double-digit lead in the fourth game. Valdosta State was able to rally late, but could never catch up.

In the opening set, Fomina had eight kills as the Lions got out to a big lead and held off a VSU rally to get the win. The Lions led by as many as seven in the first game before a late surge by the Blazers tied the set at 20-20. UNA responded with four straight points and won the set on a kill by Andrea De Leon.

North Alabama led 22-20 in the second set before an error on the Blazers and two kills by Fomina put the Lions up 2-0 in the match. Lexi Bradley added six kills in the frame.

Valdosta State avoided the sweep by scoring two late points in the third set. With the game tied at 23-23, The Blazers got back-to-back kills to extend the match.

Lions led wire to wire in the final set. UNA built a 22-7 lead before the Blazers answered with a run of their own. A 10-1 spurt made it 23-17 before the two teams split the final four points. A kill from Bradley ended the set and the match.

Jessica Austin had four kills in the fourth set to lead UNA. She finished with 13 total kills and five blocks on the day. Bradley added 11 kills while De Leon posted 55 assists.

Defensively, Ashtyn Kapovich and Sarah Ann Tillery had 17 digs each. Peyton Lang added 14 digs while De Leon flirted with a triple double at seven kills and nine digs to go along with her assist total.

With the first round bye, UNA will next see action on Nov. 21 in the semi-final round of the GSC Tournament. The Lions will face the winner of Tuesday's Valdosta State/West Alabama match. The 2015 GSC championship match is slated for Sunday at the UWF Field House in Pensacola, Fla.
