Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

LATE BASKET GIVES LIONS FOURTH STRAIGHT WIN

FLORENCE – John Fletcher's basket with 3.9 seconds remaining gave North Alabama an 80-78 lead and Shorter missed a jumper at the buzzer to give the Lions the home victory Saturday afternoon in Gulf South Conference men's basketball action. The frantic final seconds capped a game that featured 14 ties and 23 lead changes, resulting in the fourth straight win for UNA.

The victory gives the Lions a 7-5 overall record and 4-2 mark in GSC play. After opening conference play with an 0-2 start, the four consecutive wins by UNA puts the team in a five-way tie for second place.

On Saturday, UNA led 45-40 at the half and neither team led by more than six points over the final 20 minutes of play. Shorter led 76-73 with 1:59 remaining before Fletcher hit one of two free throws and UNA grabbed a defensive rebound at the other end. Dimarrio Jackson then drove for a layup to tie the game at 76-76 at the 1:01 mark.

Following another miss by the Hawks, Jackson gave UNA a brief 78-76 lead with a runner with 20 seconds left. Shorter's Phil Tayler, however, tied the game with a basket with just under 10 seconds remaining. Fletcher took the inbounds pass and drove the length of the floor for the go-ahead basket.

Shorter called timeout and got an open look at the buzzer. Taylor's jumper from just inside three-point range, however, was off the mark.

Fletcher finished with 19 points to lead the Lions. Bilal Richardson recorded 15 points and 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season and third in the last four outings. True freshman Tavaras Tollivar added 14 points while Jackson finished with 12 points on the day.

Chris Daniels led Shorter (5-6 overall, 1-5 GSC) with a game-high 20 points.

After taking two weeks off for the Christmas break, UNA will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 2, at Delta State. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. at Sillers Coliseum on the DSU campus in Cleveland, Miss.
