LIVINGSTON – The University of North Alabama volleyball team opened Gulf South Conference play with a 3-0 sweep at West Alabama Tuesday evening. Natasha Fomina had 16 kills in the 25-16, 25-21, 25-15 victory. The seventh straight win gives the Lions a 7-2 overall record and 1-0 mark in GSC play.

For the match, UNA hit .323 with 41 kills, while the Tigers (2-6 overall, 0-1 GSC) struggled on offense. West Alabama hit .000 in the opening set and -.029 in the third set. A .355 showing in the second set resulted in the closest game. Fomina, however, had eight kills of her own in the frame as the Lions rallied from a 21-19 deficit.

After an attack error by the Tigers, a service ace by Andrea De Leon tied the game at 21-21. Fomina then recorded a kill and a service ace of her own to give UNA a 23-21 lead. A block by Lexie Bradley and Peyton Lang set up set point before another UWA error gave the Lions the win.

Fomina finished with a season-high .556 hitting percentage. De Leon added 22 assists while Ashtyn Kapovich turned in 10 digs on the night.

North Alabama will return home for two conference matches over the weekend. The Lions will host Shorter Friday at 7 p.m. before playing Lee at 2 p.m. the following day at Flowers Hall.
