UNA WOMEN OPEN SEASON WITH 70-65 WIN AT TUSKEGEE

TUSKEGEE, Ala., – Trailing by eight points with 4:01 remaining, the University of North Alabama women's basketball team closed the game on a 16-3 run to defeat host Tuskegee 70-65 Friday evening. Ivy Wallen scored a game-high 23 points, including hitting 5-of-6 free throws in the final 30 seconds to ice the victory.
 
UNA (1-0) led by as many as 17 in the first half, but only took a 30-27 lead into the break after Tuskegee used an 18-9 third-quarter run.  The Lions led 52-48 at the end of the third quarter before the home team began its rally.
 
A jumper with 7:24 remaining gave the Tigeretts their first lead at 54-52. The two teams traded baskets until Tuskegee went on an 8-0 run over a three-minute span to take its largest lead of the game at 62-54 with 4:01 remaining in the contest.
 
The Lions, however, would answer. Michaela DeKilder scored four of her eight points during an 8-0 UNA spurt that tied the game at 62-all at the 1:59 mark. The teams traded baskets before resorting to free throw shooting to decide the outcome down the stretch.
 
Jaclyn Heath hit one of two free throws to give UNA a 65-64 lead with 1:18 remaining and Tuskegee missed its final four shots from the floor. After each miss, the Lions were able to secure the rebound and connected from the free throw line at the other end.
 
KeKe Gunter added 15 points and eight rebounds for the Lions. Heath finished the night with 14 points.
 
As a team, North Alabama was 23-of-37 from the foul line. Wallen connected on 11-of-15 free throw attempts.
 
UNA will remain in Tuskegee to face Claflin on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. at Chappie James Arena on the TU campus.
