UNA MEN GET 101-96 OVERTIME WIN OVER SAINT LEO

FLORENCE – After rallying to force overtime, the University of North Alabama men's basketball team outscored Saint Leo 17-12 in the extra period to record a 101-96 victory Sunday afternoon at Flowers Hall. With the win the Lions improve to 2-0 after starting the season against two teams from the Sunshine State Conference.

UNA trailed by as many as nine in the second half and faced an 84-76 deficit with 2:41 remaining.  An 8-0 run to close regulation, however, tied the game at 84-84 and gave the Lions new life.

After Saint Leo took an 88-86 lead early in the extra period, UNA used a 10-0 run to grab an eight-point lead with 1:10 remaining. Back-to-back three-point baskets by Jeff Hodge and Dimario Jackson pushed the lead 96-88.

SLU, however, would answer. The visiting Lions produced an 8-0 run of their own to tie the game at 96-all in the final 30 seconds of play.

UNA regained the advantage with a basket by Jackson and pushed the lead to 99-96 after a defensive stop. Saint Leo was called for a flagrant foul, allowing UNA to retain possession after Hodge hit one of two free throws with 4.6 seconds to play.

Several missed tip-ins at the basket allowed the clock to move to .4 seconds before Austin Timms was fouled. The senior connected on both free throws to account for the final score.

Jackson led four UNA players in double figures with 21 points and six assists. Hodge added 19 points while Damion Ottman tossed in 16 points for the Lions. Johnell Ginnie rounded out the top scorers for UNA with 12 points. For the game, 10 different players scored for North Alabama.

Leading by eight in the closing minutes of regulation, Saint Leo missed its final four shots of the second half while UNA began the comeback.

After a three-pointer by Jackson cut the lead to 84-79, the Lions got a stop on defense, followed by a basket from Ottman to make it a three-point game. UNA then grabbed another defensive rebound and got to the free throw line with under a minute to play. Ottman hit both foul shots to make the score 84-83 with 48 seconds remaining.

Myrek Lee-Fowlkes helped tie the game with a steal on defense and an offensive rebound at the other end of the floor. He was fouled on the play and hit one of two free throws to tie the game at 84-84 with 23 seconds to play. Saint Leo missed a potential game-winning three with five seconds remaining to force overtime.

UNA trailed 39-36 at the half but shot 50 percent (17-of-34) from the floor over the final 20 minutes of play. Marcus Dewberry led Saint Leo (0-2) with a game-high 35 points.

North Alabama will host Oakwood Thursday in an exhibition contest. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
