UNA TOPS TIGERS 67-61 FOR FIRST GSC WIN

FLORENCE – After trailing by one at the break, the University of North Alabama men's basketball team outscored West Alabama 44-37 over the final 20 minutes to get a 67-61 victory Thursday evening at Flowers Hall. The win evens UNA's Gulf South Conference record at 1-1 on the year and gives the Lions a 6-2 overall mark.

Dimario Jackson scored 18 points and recorded four assists to lead UNA. The senior from Addis, La., had only four points at the break before connecting on a pair of three-point baskets to go along with his 6-for-6 showing at the free throw line in the second half.

After West Alabama took a 24-23 lead into the locker room, the two teams traded baskets throughout the early stages of the second half. UWA led 33-32 with 15:49 remaining when the Lions grabbed the lead for good with an 8-0 run.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Johnell Ginnie and Jackson gave the Lions a 38-33 lead before a steal and another basket by Jackson pushed the lead to 40-33 at the 13:58 mark.

The Lions led by as many as 12 before UWA made its final push. After two free throws by Sharwyn McGee gave UNA a 59-47 lead, the Wolves were able to get within four in the final two minutes.

A basket by the visitors cut the lead to 63-59 before the Wolves regained possession with a defensive rebound in the final minute of play. Austin Timms, however, denied the Wolves a chance to get any closer with a blocked shot with 43.2 seconds remaining.

Jackson then put the game out of reach with four free throws over the final 39 seconds to seal the win.

Ginnie finished with 12 points while Timms added 11 points and six rebounds on the night. West Alabama (4-3 overall, 0-2 GSC) was led by Lahmal Lane's game-high 19 points.

UNA will host defending GSC champion West Georgia on Monday. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
